"Seeing you get married would be a dream come true for us as parents. It hasn't been easy for your mom and me, you know?"
Paloma's explanation drained the last bit of Jason’s frustration.
Neither he nor Keith had shed a tear, so what was she crying about? Did she really think she had a right to feel wronged?
Jason stared at Paloma, his face blank, wanting to say something but ultimately holding back.
What was there to say? It was just absurd.
If it weren’t for his grand proposal to Estrella, they likely wouldn’t have remembered they had a son.
As Jason met her gaze, silent, Paloma felt her heart ache. She would’ve preferred if Jason had blamed them, even just a little. It would’ve made her feel somewhat better. But Jason wouldn’t give them that satisfaction.
Jason knew what she was thinking, which made him even less inclined to engage.
Complaining would make them feel better. Ignoring them, not acknowledging their self-pity, made them feel awkward.
After all these years, what were they to him? If not out of respect for Landon and Cole, he wouldn’t have shown up today.
Wiping her tears and staring at Jason, Paloma said, “Jason, if you’re upset with us, just say it. It might make you feel better.”
Jason chuckled. “Nah, Auntie. You two aren’t that significant. I’m here for my dad and my father-in-law.”
Engaging with Paloma would seem like he was holding a grudge, as if he cared about them.
But he didn’t hold a grudge. He truly didn’t care.
So, he added, looking at Paloma, “To me, you two are strangers. Just suddenly popping back into everyone’s life as if resurrected. If I had to express my feelings, disgust is all I have.”
Jason’s casual remarks turned Paloma pale, her tears stopping in their tracks, rendering her speechless.
His word, ‘disgust’, hit harder than a thousand insults, because it conveyed nothing but disdain and contempt.
After Jason’s comment, the room fell into a stifling silence.
Keith, looking at Jason, was filled with pride. His own outburst and earlier displeasure didn’t compare to Jason’s piercing words.
This boy knew how to strike at the heart.
Thankfully, he hadn’t been so harsh with him.
