Jason might have looked calm, but Landon was the one squirming inside.
He glanced over at Hans and Paloma, wanting to say something, but the words just wouldn’t come out.
When Hans looked at Jason, he could see that Jason’s eyes held nothing for him and Paloma—no recognition, no emotion. It made Hans feel even guiltier. They had wronged him for so many years, and he knew that Jason was well aware of everything; he just chose to keep quiet.
Cole, sitting nearby, didn’t even dare to breathe loudly. He just hoped that this mess wouldn’t affect Estrella or the kids’ relationships. After all, it was the adults who had been causing all the trouble for the kids.
The room was silent for a moment until Landon finally broke it with a heavy sigh. “Jason, there are things from the past that we owe you an explanation for.”
Jason looked at Landon, waiting for him to continue.
“We were set up back then. When the bank started demanding loan repayments, we were in a tight spot. It was a big misunderstanding, but in the end, we were just too young and too proud to handle it right.”
Landon took a sip of water before continuing, “The car accident back then... your biological parents didn’t actually die. That was something we orchestrated. Your father-in-law and I kept it under wraps according to plan.”
“Jason, we’re truly sorry for deceiving you all these years.”
Landon’s regret was palpable, but he hadn’t told Jason the truth earlier, fearing it would hurt him. After all, when Hans and Paloma left, they didn’t plan on taking him with them.
Hans turned to Keith, saying, “Dad, what happened back then had nothing to do with Cole, especially Cole. I mistakenly trusted that lawyer, and despite Cole’s strong objections, Paloma and I were stubborn.”
With Hans’s confession, Keith could hardly bear to look at him.
The night before, when Hans and Paloma showed up, Keith was furious. He beat Hans with his cane so badly that Edith had to call the doctor just in time.
Now, listening to Hans, Keith turned his face away, unable to look at him.
Hans, feeling guilty, then looked at Jason. Their eyes met briefly before Jason looked away, pulling out a cigarette and lighting it.
After a puff, Paloma coughed, and Jason, without a word, snuffed out the cigarette. It wasn’t for her; he would’ve done the same for anyone.
Without responding to Paloma, Hans said, “Jason, over the years, your mother and I have failed you the most.”
Jason looked up, “Sorry, but my mom is Kristin. She hasn’t failed me in any way.”
