Glancing over at Jason, Estrella said, “Mom, it’s fine if Isaac stays with you for a few days. I won’t be coming over.”

On the other end of the line, Kristin hurriedly responded, “Estrella, don’t worry, dear! Just come on over and stay. I’ll take care of Isaac. You and Jason go on with your plans; he won’t get in your way.”

Two days after Estrella was discharged, Jason stayed home quietly for two nights, causing Kristin to become increasingly anxious.

When Jason mentioned that he was having dinner with Estrella today, Kristin immediately called, hoping to coax Estrella into coming back.

People grow closer with interaction, Kristin knew this from her own experiences.

In the driver’s seat, Jason listened to Kristin’s verbal juggling act as if the beads of her abacus were about to hit him in the face. He reached out, took Estrella’s phone, and said, “Mom, just take good care of Isaac. Stop meddling in between us, and we’ll talk when I get home.”

Without waiting for Kristin’s response, Jason hung up.

He had promised Estrella freedom a few days ago, supporting whatever decision she made. If he now conspired with Kristin to trick her into coming home, it would be a rapid self-contradiction.

Estrella needed her space.

Handing the phone back to Estrella, Jason said, “Don’t mind Mom’s fussing. Just do what makes you happy.”

Taking the phone, Estrella smiled and said, “Thanks.”

In truth, Estrella understood without Jason having to say it; he was cautious about getting too close, harboring his own worries and considerations.

Soon, they arrived at the Dorvold family mansion. As Estrella unbuckled her seatbelt and got out, Jason stepped out to see her to the door, watching her enter the mansion. He stood outside for a while until Kristin called him back.

However, as soon as he stepped inside, Kristin exploded in frustration, “Jason, what were you thinking? I’ve been strategizing for days, thinking Estrella wouldn’t want to offend me and would listen. How could you not read the situation and even hang up on me?”

Jason hung his coat on the rack, replying in a calm tone, “Mom, stop pressuring Estrella with our status as elders or using moral guilt. If I’m good enough for her, she’ll choose to be with me. If not, forcing her isn’t fair.”

“I want Estrella to be herself and to be happy.”

Hearing this, Kristin retorted, “Then you should treat her even better!”

But remembering Jason had hung up on her, Kristin curiously probed, “Jason, aren’t you afraid Estrella might leave you for someone else?”

Rolling up his sleeves, Jason said, “If she chooses someone else, it means they’re better for her, and I’ll accept it.”

Kristin was speechless.

Seeing Kristin’s complex look, Jason reassured with a smile, “Don’t worry, Mom. I’ll treat Estrella well, in the way she wants, and love her more than anyone else.”

Relieved, Kristin finally said, “I was just scared, you know. I didn’t mean to pressure her. I just believe that if you two love each other, you should be together.”

Patting Kristin on the shoulder, Jason assured, “Mom, I’ll cherish the love Estrella has for me.”

“That’s all I needed to hear,” Kristin smiled.
