Jason didn’t budge his car; instead, he looked over at her. Estrella opened the car door and stepped out.
With a casual stride, Estrella glanced at Jason’s black Maybach and remarked, “You’re blocking the road, big guy.”
Her tone carried a hint of familiarity. Jason looked back at the mansion and replied steadily, “I came to see Isaac.”
Estrella glanced at the mansion, responding calmly, “He’s probably asleep by now. If you really want to see him, come pick him up this weekend.”
He was Isaac’s father, and even though Isaac hadn’t mentioned wanting to see him lately, she wouldn’t stop them from spending time together. She wasn’t about to be unfair to Jason.
Estrella’s understanding made Jason want to hug her, to kiss her, to tell her how much he missed her. But he had to push those feelings down, keeping his voice steady, “Alright, I’ll come by this weekend for Isaac.”
After discussing Isaac, Estrella pointed at his car, “You’re in my way. Could you move it?”
In that moment, she was just as laid-back and effortless as she used to be. She bore no grudge against Jason; they were just two exes living separate lives.
The more indifferent Estrella seemed, the harder it was for Jason to let go.
In the past, he would have kissed her without a second thought, but now, he had to restrain himself.
“Sure,” he said after a long look at Estrella, and got into his car.
As the Maybach slowly pulled away, Estrella got back into her car and started it up. Driving past him, she rolled down her window and said, “After you pick up Isaac this weekend, you guys can figure out where to have fun.”
Jason looked down, his eyes deep with emotion, and replied, “Alright.”
Estrella closed her window and her car slowly disappeared into the distance.
Jason watched her leave, lingering long after she was gone, reminiscing about the times she’d playfully pester him, the times she’d follow him around saying, “Jason, let’s have a kid!”
He missed everything about Estrella.
Having been with someone as stunning as Estrella, he knew he’d never love anyone else again.

Inside the house, Cole was still awake, greeting Estrella as she returned, “You’re back.”
Seeing Cole seemingly waiting for her, she said, “Dad, you’re still up?”
“Yeah,” Cole replied, then with a serious tone, “Estrella, did Drew come looking for you a few days ago?”
Knowing Jason was back, Cole had been prepared and waited up to talk to her.
Estrella confirmed Drew had sought her out, and Cole called her into the study.
Sitting behind his desk, Cole listened as Estrella presented the evidence to him.
After reviewing it, Cole’s face grew solemn, “While the situation is as it appears, it’s not entirely so. We were young and fell into a trap, creating this mess.”
