Estrella shook her head with a chuckle, "Your mom’s just not cut out for this kind of thing."
Jason looked up, his eyes locking onto hers.
Isaac kept tugging at her sleeve, pleading, "Come on, Ella! Please, come with us!"
But Estrella was firm, "I'm heading back for a nap. Think of this as your early lesson in socializing." After weeks of non-stop work, she had finally carved out a day for herself, and she intended to spend it catching up on sleep.
With a yawn, she turned and headed back towards the house.
Seeing she wouldn't budge, Isaac chased after her, his voice soft and whiny, "Mom, if you're not going, I'm not going either."
Estrella stopped and looked down at Isaac.
Their eyes met, and Isaac's look of utter betrayal seemed to accuse Estrella of abandoning him.
With a mix of amusement and exasperation, Estrella assured him, "I'm not selling you off. Uncle's taking you somewhere fun."
Isaac, however, wasn’t convinced. Clinging to Estrella’s pajama pants, he made it clear that without her, he had no interest in going anywhere. He hardly knew this uncle, after all.
Sighing heavily, Estrella finally looked up at Jason, who was giving her the same innocent look as Isaac, full of silent pleas.
The standoff continued, with Estrella growing increasingly impatient with the two of them - the grown man and the child before her. Rolling her eyes at Jason, she reluctantly headed towards the car, pulling open the back door and settling inside.
As Estrella got into the car, both Isaac and Jason turned to watch her, noting her casual home attire and slippers, her hair held back by a yellow butterfly clip - a clear sign she hadn't even bothered to wash her face, let alone get dressed properly.
Isaac, with a hint of embarrassment, asked, "Mom, you're not changing your shoes?"
Jason couldn't hide his disdain. "Estrella, you're really going out like this?"
With a defiant look, Estrella shot back, "Why bother dolling up? Not like I’m trying to rekindle old flames or seduce you. Who cares if you're judging me?"
Then, as she started to get out of the car, "Fine, I just won't go."
Isaac quickly scooted next to her, "I don’t mind, Ella. You're my favorite just the way you are."
Jason, seeing the resolve in their faces, closed the car door, "If you're not worried about it, neither are we."
The car soon pulled away, with Estrella quickly wrapping herself in a blanket and dozing off, head tilted back in utter exhaustion.
From the rearview mirror, Jason glimpsed Estrella’s peaceful slumber, realizing just how little he figured in her thoughts now, not even worth the effort of a face wash.
Isaac sat next to Estrella, glancing back and forth between her and Jason, his feelings a tangled mess.
It seemed, to Isaac, that his mom and this uncle were quite familiar with each other, comfortable enough that she didn’t feel the need to dress up or tidy her hair.
Estrella, for her part, couldn't care less about their opinions. She was there to sleep, not to impress.
Jason asked Isaac where he'd like to go, and upon hearing "amusement park," he steered them towards a day of fun.
