Not long after, the call connected, but before Kristin could even get a word out, Jason cut in, saying he had to attend a meeting, and abruptly hung up.
Seeing him so indifferent and not mentioning anything about Isaac, Kristin figured Paula had to be making up stories to tarnish Estrella's reputation.
By evening, when Estrella was done with work, Jason's car was already parked outside the law firm, windows down, looking utterly relaxed, like he was ready for a storytime session.
Estrella walked over, slid into the passenger seat, and Jason barely gave her a glance, not even bothering with his usual chivalry of buckling her in.
The drive home was filled with Estrella's work calls, showing she was busier than Jason, the big-shot CEO.
Already irritated about her lunch with Korey and the lies she told, Jason felt even more aggrieved as she seemed too busy for him. It felt as if, now that she had him, she wasn't putting effort into their relationship anymore.
When they pulled into the Dorvold family's driveway, Jason didn’t get out immediately. Instead, he turned to Estrella, his tone casual yet probing, "Honey, did anything out of the ordinary happen today? Anything you feel you need to be honest about?"
It took Estrella a moment to catch on, but remembering her lunch with Korey, she instantly understood Jason's mood. He knew about the meetup all along; the call was a bluff.
Knowing full well what she was up to, he had still asked if she was dining with Jesse, leading her to admit it before her brain could catch up.
"Jason, you really play deep games, setting traps for me," Estrella said, eyeing him with disdain.
"Me, playing games?" Jason chuckled. "If you weren't feeling guilty, why lie?"
Before Estrella could respond, Jason coldly added, "Estrella, think carefully about the story you're going to spin, how you plan to fool me," and then he stepped out of the car.
Watching his jealousy radiate from within, Estrella felt her head ache.
She hurried after him, "It was just a lunch, Jason. Don’t blow things out of proportion!"
Jason ignored her explanations, not even looking back as he entered the house.
"Daddy!" Isaac ran towards him with little legs, a pout on his face. Jason instantly lifted him, smiling, "There's my boy."
Holding Isaac close and showering his cheeks with kisses, much like he did with Estrella years ago, Jason played the protective father.
As Estrella entered, Isaac called out to her, wanting to show affection, but Jason held him tight, childishly claiming, "Buddy, Estrella wants to bring in a new daddy, someone you don't know. You have to stick with me, okay?"
Isaac's wide-eyed shock at the idea of getting a new dad was evident as he looked incredulously at Estrella.
