Estrella grabbed her phone and saw Serene was calling again. She had just spoken to her a few moments ago, so why was she calling back so soon? Without wasting time, Estrella answered.
“Estrella, dig into my case. Whoever's trying to kill me is also behind the fire from seven years ago,” Serene's voice crackled through the line.
Estrella's face went pale. “Where are you now?”
But there was no response—just the sound of a phone hitting the ground, a burst of static, and then silence.
Panicking, Estrella burst out of the bathroom. “Jason, something’s happened to Serene!”
Jason, still in the shower, quickly turned off the water. He barely dried off, threw on some clothes, and rushed out with Estrella. He was on edge, driven by Estrella’s panic and the possible clue Serene might have uncovered.

At the top of an old building, just before she fell, Serene chose to trust Estrella. Despite the damning evidence from Holly, she believed these people were uninvolved.
As her body collided with the ground after several impacts, Serene's eyes slowly closed. She felt no cold, no pain, just a sense that she no longer belonged to this world. She wouldn't have to struggle, chase unrequited love, feel ashamed of her past or the scar on her stomach, or handle trivial matters at home or work.
But what would her mom do without her? And Vincent?
As her consciousness faded, the world seemed so quiet. She hoped Estrella had heard her last call. She hoped she'd find the culprit.
Twenty minutes later, when Estrella and Jason arrived at Serene's rundown house, a crowd had already gathered, umbrellas in hand, and an ambulance was on the scene. Seeing Serene being loaded into the ambulance, covered in blood, Estrella's legs gave out, her eyes welling with tears.
Jason swallowed hard, putting an arm around Estrella's shoulder. Serene's final act of trust weighed heavily on her heart.
At the hospital, Drew had already arrived and completed the necessary paperwork.
Outside the OR, Estrella, wrapped in her own arms, stared blankly ahead, utterly exhausted. Jason stayed by her side.
Drew tried to offer some comfort. "The fall wasn’t direct. She hit a few things on the way down, which slowed her fall. There's a good chance she'll make it."
Drew's words hardly lifted the heavy mood.
When the police called, asking for more details, Jason drove Estrella to the station. The case was difficult to advance. Serene's old neighborhood was remote, and the surveillance cameras hadn’t worked in ages.
