Keith and Amber listened intently as Bryce laid out his plan, nodding vigorously even before he finished speaking. "Absolutely, absolutely," they chimed in unison, eager to show their support. For them, it was a no-brainer—a done deal a hundred times over.
After Bryce addressed their initial concerns, his mom, still tinged with disbelief, pressed for confirmation. "Son, are you really sure about this? Like, really sure?"
Bryce, surprised by his mom's skepticism, replied, "Mom, what are you getting at?"
It wasn't like he was clueless or anything. He had simply chosen to stay true to himself.
His mom quickly shook her head, her expression serious. "Nothing, nothing. As long as you're sure, that's all that matters."
She couldn't help but feel a mix of pride and relief. Her boy was finally stepping into adulthood.
With the family's blessing now clear, Bryce's demeanor remained unchanged as he mentioned, "I'll go get Jesse."
"Jesse's here too? Why didn't you two come in together? Why leave her outside? Go fetch her, and let's have dinner!" Bryce's mom urged.
Soon after, Bryce re-entered the room, followed by a girl dressed in a grey coat over a pink hoodie, white jeans, and black-and-white sneakers. Her dark hair was tied in a low ponytail. Her clear, fair skin and delicate features immediately drew everyone's attention.
Bryce's mom glanced at the girl, then back at Bryce, confused. "Bryce, didn't you say Jesse was here? Why haven't you called her in for dinner?"
Amber, with a hint of mischief, chimed in, "And who might this young lady be? Jesse's new chauffeur?"
The girl, cheeks flushing, cleared her throat and greeted, "Grandpa, Grandma, Aunt."
Her voice sent a wave of shock through the room, causing Bryce's mom to drop her chopsticks. Staring at the girl, she stammered, "Jesse? Is that you?"
The family was taken aback. Even Keith and Amber were stunned.
