The Reign's rooftop featured an exclusive open-air bar, enclosed by sleek glass balustrades adorned with lush greenery.
Folding tables and woven rattan chairs were scattered around, topped with premium liquor bottles that glowed softly under the ambient night lights.
This area was strictly off-limits to the public.
Ashton Wyatt leaned against the glass, smoking. A moment later, Reina Winslet approached. Seeing that the waitress who bore a striking resemblance to Sylvia Harlow was gone, she quietly breathed a sigh of relief.
Stepping up beside Ashton, she gazed at his sharp, sculpted jawline. "Are you in a bad mood, Ash?"
She had noticed him chain-smoking a lot lately.
"It's nothing," Ashton replied flatly, his tone giving nothing away.
Seeing him like this made Reina's chest tighten. He felt so distant.
Even when Ashton was quiet in the past, he had never been completely unreadable. But right now, he felt like a total stranger.
His lingering gaze on that waitress earlier had stoked a jealous fire she couldn't extinguish.
Acting on impulse, Reina blurted out, "You're thinking about Sylvia, aren't you?"
Ashton remained silent, staring out at the city skyline. He didn't want to lie.
Sometimes, silence was the loudest answer of all.
Reina's eyes grew red, and she bit her lip until it turned pale. "Are you regretting our engagement? Are you having second thoughts?"
"No." Ashton glanced up at a glowing red billboard displaying both of their names side by side. Suddenly, it all felt entirely meaningless.
He turned to leave, but Reina threw her arms around his strong, sturdy frame.
"Ash, don't go!"
She stood on her tiptoes, desperately trying to reach his lips, but given their height difference, she only managed to kiss his jaw and throat.
There couldn't be.
Ashton walked away without a backward glance.
Reina slumped to the ground, sobbing quietly. What was the point of having him if this was how it would be?
Footsteps approached her again. A pair of sharp-toed men's dress shoes appeared in her tear-blurred vision. Hope flared in her chest as she looked up, only to realize it wasn't Ashton.
The man had his hair slicked back into a small ponytail, exuding a playboy vibe. His expression was loose, carrying a mocking smirk.
It was Connor Brooks.
Connor leaned down, pinching her chin. "Tough luck. Even if you cry your eyes out, he's never coming back."
Reina slapped his hand away. "Are you just here to watch the show?"
He didn't answer. Instead, he kissed the tear tracking down her eye, trailing down to her lips. Before she could process what was happening, he bit down hard enough to split her lip, then quickly pulled back.
