She figured she might be able to extract some information from Gideon. She had no idea when Ashton had replaced his assistant. She was somewhat familiar with Finley, but this Gideon was a total stranger she had barely exchanged two words with.
Ashton's lips curved into a smirk, though his eyes remained utterly devoid of warmth as he stared down at her. "Why are you so worried about him? I haven't eaten either, and I don't see you caring about me."
Driven by his territorial possessiveness, he pulled Sylvia flush against his chest and lightly bit her earlobe. "If you don't want to eat food, I can always feed you something else."
Gideon had already practically sprinted out the door.
If he stayed a second longer, he was certain Ashton's death glare would physically incinerate him.
Flustered, Sylvia shoved Ashton away. "I'm hungry! I want to eat."
She rushed over to the dining table and sat down.
The table was loaded with all of Sylvia's old favorites. She had always loved spicy food, claiming that anything without heat was completely tasteless. Chicken wings, shrimp, thinly sliced beef—everything was coated in thick layers of chili and spice.
Ashton, on the other hand, had a notoriously low tolerance for spice. He preferred sweet and sour profiles, a trait Sylvia used to tease him about, calling it a "toddler's palate."
Back in college, whenever Sylvia forced him to share her spicy snacks, Ashton would chug water endlessly. He never complained, though; whatever she wanted to eat, he would suffer through it.
But ever since getting pregnant, Sylvia's cravings had flipped. She now strongly preferred sweet and sour foods. This massive feast of spicy dishes was now the exact opposite of what she wanted.
Sylvia held her fork, unmoving. A sudden, absurd thought struck her—what if the baby in her stomach had inherited Ashton's palate? A sharp pang of sorrow gripped her chest, a feeling as though something exclusively hers had been stolen away.
Without a word, she quietly began eating just plain white rice.
Noticing this, Ashton frowned slightly. "Why aren't you eating the meat?"
"None of your business," she snapped.
