Ashton replied with lazy nonchalance, "We're watching a movie."
The restaurant was connected to an underground luxury cinema, a famous hotspot for couples. Ashton bought tickets just like any normal boyfriend bringing his girl on a date.
Sylvia had absolutely no desire to watch a movie. Before she could voice her protest, Ashton shot her a freezing glare. "Keep it to yourself."
Swallowing her anger, she refused to look at him.
"Sir, would you like some popcorn? Your girlfriend looks like she really wants some."
The concessions worker was clearly spouting nonsense just to make a sale.
Ashton glanced at Sylvia's deeply aggrieved expression. Something crossed his mind, and his lips curved upward. "Sure. Give us one."
They walked into the theater. Ashton had purchased seats in the very back row.
As soon as they sat down, the theater began to slowly fill up. Trailers played on the massive screen, and the prime seats in the center rows were quickly taken.
Right before the feature started, two more people walked in and took seats in the third row from the back.
Sylvia froze instantly. It was Julian and the elegant woman from the restaurant.
They hadn't noticed Sylvia and Ashton, as there were two completely empty rows separating them.
Sylvia ducked her head, her mind racing.
She pulled out her phone and saw a new message from Julian: "Sorry, something came up. I'll explain everything when I get back."
Once the movie began, she forced herself to act entirely normal, methodically eating popcorn and staring at the screen as if her world wasn't collapsing.
Catching her rigid attempt at acting unaffected, Ashton leaned over and offered a magnanimous suggestion. "Your fiancé is sitting right down there. Aren't you going to go say hi?"
He asked purely to twist the knife, but seeing the deep furrow between her brows didn't bring him the satisfaction he expected.
Sylvia ignored him completely, continuing to eat her popcorn. The movie was aggressively terrible, a total waste of time.
Perhaps eating too quickly to mask her anxiety, a kernel caught in her throat. She broke into a violent fit of coughing, struggling for a few seconds before finally swallowing it down. The noise was loud enough to make someone in the front row turn around.
Sylvia furiously scrubbed the back of her hand across her mouth, as if trying to wipe away something filthy.
Watching her, Ashton ground his teeth, his voice dropping to a dangerous chill. "So disgusted by me, yet you just swallowed my saliva without a problem."
His blunt words only made the knot in her stomach twist tighter.
Taking in her deeply distressed and humiliated expression, Ashton's gaze grew visibly darker. The atmosphere between them completely froze, and they sat in suffocating silence until the credits rolled.
When the lights came up, Sylvia intentionally stalled, waiting until the theater was nearly empty and playing on her phone for another ten minutes before finally standing up.
Ashton trailed lazily beside her.
She slipped into the restroom, returning a few minutes later with her lips scrubbed clean and damp.
Ashton immediately knew exactly what she had been doing. Was she really that repulsed by him?
He grabbed her wrist hard. "It's the third day. Aren't you going to give me an answer?"
