Chapter 106
Orion mansion.
The ambiance surrounding the mansion was quite surreal, oblivious to the tremor that would befall it any moment from
now.
Connor was seated in the middle of the garden, covered from the sun by the shade of a coconut tree. Flower beds were bursting with life and colour. Roses, peonies, and lilies create a delightful sensory experience that perfumes the air with a heady, natural aroma.
Connor was having a quiet time reading a book. For a long time, he had never had so much free time at his disposal. He quite enjoyed it.
Right now, a romance book sat comfortably in his hands without a care in the world. He was having the best time of his life. Well, until the incessant barking of his new guard dog shattered his concentration.
“Can you get that animal away from me? He is interrupting my flow,” Connor attempted to wave them away, but the guard holding the dog’s leash appeared to have lost something in that spot. He was frantically searching for something near the cobblestone pathway.
“I’m sorry, sir. I was doing my routine check-up around the mansion when I noticed my wedding ring was missing. I believe I lost it somewhere in this area, and Billy here is helping me find it.” the bulky guard explained, distress etched on his face.
“Who is Billy?” Connor blurted out, confused
“The dog.” The guard clarified, pointing at it.
“Oh,” Connor cleared his throat, feeling slightly embarrassed by his question, “I’m sorry about your wedding ring. If you lost it here, then you should search and find it. Such things should be held close.”
The guard bowed in gratitude, “Thank you very much, sir.” And continued searching.
Connor tried to refocus on his book, but Billy’s barking made it impossible. Sighing, he shut the book and decided to admire the scenery of his home instead.
The sight failed to impress him, considering he had observed the same landscape his entire life.
“Maybe it needs some renovations,” He mused aloud, squinting his eyes behind his glasses to watch the birds in the sky. Bored, he turned to the guard and his loud companion, “Still haven’t found it yet, Billy?”
“Sir, Billy is the dog. My name is John.” The guard corrected him, flabbergasted.
“Yeah, I know. I wasn’t talking to you,” John flushed in embarrassment while Connor laughed internally. He had taken revenge for the previous embarrassment.
Connor’s gaze shifted to the brown German shepherd who barked at him impatiently in response. He raised his hands in surrender, “Fine, take your time.” He released another sigh, reclining in his seat.
Shortly, Patricia emerged from the mansion, holding a tray in her hands. As she approached the garden, she shot a disdainful look at Billy, who returned her glare with equal distaste.
“God! Felicity just had to bring this creature here!” Patricia scowled, placing the tray in front of Connor. It held two steaming glasses of chocolate milk and a plate of freshly baked cookies. Patricia wasn’t foolish enough to offer Connor tea of any kind after the previous incident. For now, they would have to settle for milk.
“I quite like the little fellow. I think he likes me too… don’t you, Billy?” Connor called out to the dog but received only a ferocious growl in response. He c***d a brow at Patricia. “See?”

Patricia chuckled dightly, rolling her eyes. “Sure, but I wish there were more familiar faces around. How about I reinstate some of the old staff?” She asked styly.
Connor spotted a deep look on his face. Ite, too, found the atmosphere strange since his return. Felicity had changed many things in his abwence.
But he had come to terms with most of them, as they had yielded good results. Besides, seeing, fresh faces after all these years was refreshing. The ambiance around the mansion felt new, and he liked it.
“No need.” He finally answered, dismissing Patricia’s suggestion. You will get used to it.”
“Oh,” Patricia replied, her shoulders slumping in disappointment, She clenched her fists tightly underneath the table and sighed, “Okay.”
Connor and Patricia lapsed into silence for a while, neither reaching to touch the milk or cookies, which were growing cold. Patricia observed this, her gaze resting on Connor. He was staring into space, lost in deep thought, looking, somewhat
peaceful.
Unlike his demeanour from a few months ago, his eyes were now vibrant, and his skin had regained a healthy glow. Even his excess wrinkles had disappeared-all a stack reminder of her biggest failure; killing him.
She frowned. “You haven’t touched your snacks. Aren’t you hungry?” She asked, grabbing a cookie herself before placing it into her mouth. If he had any suspicious thoughts towards the snacks, this should dispel it, she thought.
This wasn’t the first time she had prepared a drink for him since his return, and she had noticed his slight hesitation before accepting them from her. He was cautious, perhaps still swayed by whatever Felicity had told him. Not that Patricia had any plans of eliminating Connor now or any time in the future. She just couldn’t risk it.
Right now, it felt like they were locked in a stalemate, a battle of wits, and she wasn’t sure who was winning.
Connor took one of the cookies and ate it. He shrugged, “Not particularly. How’s the milk?”
Patricia eyed the chocolate milk with a slight frown on her face, and her lips curled in distaste, “I’m not a fan of them. You know I prefer herbal tea. Milk is fattening.”
“Then why did you make two glasses then?” Connor asked.
Patricia shrugged, “I didn’t want you to feel alone while drinking yours.”
Connor laughed, “Don’t worry, dear sister. I won’t feel alone. You should discard the glass of milk. It’s distracting.”
Patricia paused, her lips pursed. How could a cup of milk be distracting? Her brother had grown stranger ever since he returned from the hospital.
“Sure,” she relented without argument, then waved John over with Billy. “Hey, you! Take my glass of milk to the kitchen.” John nodded and reached to take it, but Connor’s voice stopped him.
“No, no. John has to look for his wedding ring before the sun gets unbearable. Why don’t you return the glass yourself? On the way, get some more cookies for me, please. They are delicious.” He said, munching on another piece of cookie.
Patricia paused, looking at Connor in disbelief. Did he just refute her in front of a guard? Unbelievable. Her jaw hung open. He had never spoken to her like that before
“Aren’t you going?” Connor pressed, gazing at her dumbfounded expression.
Patricia was shaken out of her reverie. “S-sure,” she stuttered, clumsily picking up her cup and causing some of it to spill in the process. Embarrassed, she shot John a glare to clean up the mess before hastily walking to the mansion with different

John instantly presented a handkerchief from his pocket and wiped the table clean. “I’m sorry, sir.”
“Why are you apologising? You weren’t the one who caused the mess. I should be thanking you for fixing it.” Connor chuckled to himself, finding John amusing.
John only stared at him, baffled. His boss seemed to have a strange sense of humour. He pocketed the handkerchief and was about to resume his search for his missing ring when Connor called him back.
“Wait,” Connor said, taking his glass of milk, and pouring some of its contents on the floor. Immediately, Billy dove for it and started licking the ground dry. Connor saw this and patted the dog. “Good boy. Don’t bark so loudly, and I’ll give you the whole glass.”
Billy barked in response before John pulled him away to search another spot. Connor picked up the romance book he had previously discarded and began reading, only for his attention to be diverted again by something alarming.
