Chapter 296
She cried out and jerked her hands back. Silver. The bars were silver. Of course they were. She cursed at the man who had brought
her there, her voice raw with rage and fear. He only winked at her before walking out of the place, as if her pain was amusing.
Ashley stood there for a while, breathing hard, feeling completely powerless. The truck was gone. Her wrists were burned. Her wolf-
had gone quiet because of the silver, and no one had promised to tell Sebastien anything. Regret came over her slowly at first, then
all at once. She sank to the floor against the wall, far from the bars, and hugged herself. For the first time since she started the
journey, she wondered if she had not been brave at all. Maybe she had simply been stupid. Maybe Joseph would never know she
tried. Maybe her mother would wait for a call that would never come.
Unknown to her, Sebastien was not around, and the people at the gate did not tell him what had happened. Ashley remained in the
cell for two days without food and water, and by the end of the first day, anger had stopped being enough to keep her steady, Her
throat dried painfully. Her stomach cramped. Her head throbbed. She tried calling out, but no one came. The silver kept Claire silent
and weak, and that made everything worse. Ashley had never realised how lonely it could feel to have her wolf pushed so far down
inside her. It felt like part of her had been buried alive.
By the end of the second day, she had broken down completely. She had never been in such a situation before. She wondered if she would ever get out or if this would be the end of her stupid mission. There was no dignity in thirst, no pride in lying on a cold floor and shaking because the body was tired of being strong. She thought of Maya and cried. She thought of Joseph and cried harder, then hated herself for it. It was clear she was in serious trouble, and the silver was driving her nuts by keeping Claire quiet.
Luckily for Ashley, some of the workers had heard her when she was being taken to the cells. Odette, Sebastien’s confidant and nanny, had heard enough to know that a woman had come demanding to see him and seeking asylum. She did not know the woman was Ashley, but the sound had stayed with her. So when Sebastien returned, Odette mustered the courage to speak while serving his
tea.
Odette had been Sebastien’s nanny since he was little and had followed him from the River pack. She cared about both brothers, but
she did not trust anyone else to care for Sebastien while he was out in the wild taking on such a daunting task. She did not like Cynthia and was glad he had dumped her and forgotten her. There was a time Odette thought that would be impossible because Sebastien had lived and breathed Cynthia. He would forgive her mistakes again and again, and Odette had watched that relationship slowly turn him into something darker. She had wished the Goddess would separate them, and she was grateful that it had finally
happened.
Odette poured Sebastien’s tea on the coffee table in his office, then picked up the cup and carried it to him at his desk. Sebastien
was busy on the computer, looking through acquisition files. He had already noticed some dubious things in them, but he had
chosen to keep it to himself for now. His face was focused and hard, the kind of look that warned people not to disturb him unless it
mattered.
“Alpha,” Odette said, serving him tea.
Sebastien grumbled a little.
“You shouldn’t call me that, Odette,” he said.

Chapter 296
“I have to because that is what you truly are. You and Klein,” she said.
Sebastien smiled at her and lifted the cup of tea.
“May I speak, please?” she asked.
He nodded and softened his eyes so she would feel comfortable enough to continue.
“Three days ago, a woman came to the pack demanding to see you. She claimed she was seeking asylum, but Boris and his men locked her up in a cell without food or water,” she said.
Sebastien tensed immediately. Boris had not told him, and that alone was enough to anger him. Then again, Boris worked for the nameless Alpha, so it was understandable that he would not feel the need to report anything, even when he should. Still, locking up a woman who came asking for asylum and hiding it from him was not something Sebastien intended to ignore. Boris had / overstepped, and Sebastien planned to discipline the Delta for it.
“I will do something about it,” he assured Odette.
Odette smiled at him and left the office. The moment she was gone, Sebastien linked Boris and ordered him to come to his office
immediately.
He was livid.
