Dr Rosenberg finally returned to sedate Amber. He had taken it upon himself to oversee everything, down to the administration of

her medication. He moved with the careful seriousness of a man determined not to make another mistake. Ethan knew what the

doctor was doing. He knew the man still carried guilt over what had happened with him, and even though Ethan did not enjoy

knowing people blamed themselves over his condition, he recognised Dr Rosenberg’s efforts. He was grateful the man remained

loyal to their family even after what Joseph had done to him. Loyalty like that was not common anymore.

After Amber fell asleep, Ethan told Joseph to go home, but Joseph shook his head immediately.

“I will like to remain with them. Besides, there is nothing to do at home, and I am tired of that bitch,” Joseph said.

Now that Amber was asleep, they could speak of Cynthia without worrying about distressing her. Victoria’s face changed for

second. It was not a big reaction, but Meadow noticed it, and so did Ethan. Victoria was hurt, but she shrugged it off like it did not

matter. Ethan knew better. Everyone knew she had been looking forward to training with Joseph. It was supposed to be time with

him, a chance to be close to him without making anything too obvious.

“What about the training?” Ethan asked.

It was the question Victoria did not dare ask herself.

“I have asked Adam and Brian to train Victoria. They are just as good as I am. They are also Alphas, so it won’t be difficult,” Joseph

said honestly.

Meadow felt bad for Victoria. Ethan felt it through the bond before he even looked at her. Meadow reached for Victoria’s hand and squeezed it gently, and Victoria squeezed back. There was no drama in it. No childish display. Just quiet disappointment. Victoria had hoped to spend time with Joseph, but it did not take much sense to see that Joseph was leaning towards Leah. Maybe it was nothing. Maybe gratitude was making him linger. Maybe the fact that Leah had saved Amber had naturally placed her under his

attention. But Leah was also intelligent and funny, and even in the short time she had been around them, Joseph had laughed more

around her than he had laughed around most people.

Victoria saw it. She accepted it with more grace than many would have.

Ethan decided it was time for them to return to the mansion, and this time, Victoria chose to follow them. The ride home was quiet.

Ethan was giddy in a way he had not been in a long time, and Meadow was happy too, but her happiness was softened by sadness

for Victoria. She did not need anyone to explain what her friend had lost. A chance, maybe. A hope. A small thing that had not yet

become anything but still hurt because it might never become anything now.

“I will call Adam and Brian to come tomorrow so you can begin your training. It will not be at the mansion, though; Joseph has

prepared a warehouse for that. Meadow and I will also train there,” Ethan said, looking at his wife.

Meadow beamed at him, and the sight made him almost forget the darkness waiting around them. Nightshade had wanted to spend time with Echo for a while now, and Meadow was happy that training would allow that. She was grateful for the gesture, and Ethan felt her joy like warmth spreading through the bond.

Victoria smiled and nodded. She did not mind training, and she did not mind having fun while doing it. As things stood, it was best she compiled the list quickly instead of delaying the way she had wanted to before. Her crush on Joseph remained, but she knew it was just a crush. Something that would fade eventually. Or maybe she was overthinking everything, and Joseph would still look her

way. Time would tell. That was all anyone had when the heart was not ready to let go.
