Chapter 304

Amber’s surgery was successful, and for the first time in what felt like forever, the McCloud family had something that did not taste

like fear. Joseph was thrilled about it in a way he did not even try to hide. There had been so many ugly things hanging over them,

so many losses, so many betrayals, so many problems waiting outside the hospital walls, but Amber had finally woken up, and that

alone felt like a miracle no one wanted to question too loudly in case it disappeared.

No one told Amber what was really happening. Not yet. Not with her body still weak and healing, and not when every part of her

needed peace. Levi remained by her side like he had been built for that one duty alone. He barely moved away from her bed, and

when he did, his eyes always returned to her as if he needed to be sure she was still breathing. Amber and Leah remained in the

same room to recover, both of them under close supervision, both of them quiet proof that prayers could still be answered even in

the middle of madness.

Amber was grateful to Leah. Unlike Joseph and Ethan, she remembered the girl. She remembered enough to look at her with

softness and wonder, not even knowing before now that the same girl would one day become her saviour. Life had a strange way of

tying people together. Sometimes cruelly. Sometimes beautifully. This time, it had brought Leah into their lives with a kind of grace

that none of them deserved but all of them needed.

The McClouds decided, at least for that moment, to put the sorrow behind them. They could not fix everything in one day. They could not take back Whitewood from a hospital room. They could not catch the anonymous Alpha while Amber was still recovering and Leah was still weak. So they did the only thing they could do. They put aside the anger and the old wounds as much as possible

and focused on the woman who had held the family together for so long.

It had been forty-eight hours since the surgery, and both women were still under hospital supervision. Meadow and Ethan were supposed to be on watch, but Joseph had refused to leave. He was supposed to have started training the recruits, and under any other circumstance, he would have thrown himself into that duty with his usual seriousness. But this was not any other circumstance. It was not every day prayers got answered. It was not every day a woman walked into their lives carrying the exact miracle their mother needed. Leah had given them something no army could have forced, and Joseph seemed unable to step away

from that truth.

He stood beside Leah’s bed for a long time, looking down at her while she slept. His face was softer than Ethan was used to seeing it. There was gratitude there, deep and honest, but there was something else too, something Ethan noticed but did not mention. Joseph thanked her quietly for everything she had done, even though Leah could not hear him. Maybe that was why he said it so

openly. Sometimes it was easier to be honest with someone who was asleep.

Meadow sat on the couch with Victoria while Ethan and Levi stayed beside Amber. Everyone looked tired, but there was happiness in the room. Not loud happiness. Not the careless kind. This was a fragile, careful joy, the kind people held gently because they knew how quickly life could turn cruel again. Still, it was joy. With Amber’s surgery behind them, they could begin to focus properly on catching the Alpha and taking back their pack. They could begin to breathe like people who had not completely lost.

“Meadow, come here,” Amber managed in a low voice.

She was not supposed to be doing much, but she sounded excited, and that alone made Ethan’s chest warm. Meadow rose at once and went to her. She bent and kissed Amber on the forehead, and Amber smiled at her with such love that words were not needed

between them. Meadow could not speak with her mouth, but she had never needed many words to be understood by those who truly

loved her. The tenderness in her eyes said enough. The way Amber looked at her said enough too.
