Chapter 306

When they got home, Victoria headed to her room while Ethan and Meadow chose to move around the garden before going upstairs. Anything to delay seeing Cynthia. The mansion still felt contaminated by her presence, and Ethan hated that. It was his home, yet

sometimes if felt like she had left her bitterness on the walls.

They moved quietly through the garden, just the two of them. Meadow walked beside his chair, and they spoke through the mind link. To anyone looking from a distance, it would seem as if they were sharing a peaceful silence. Maybe they were Their silence

had always been fuller than other people’s noise.

“I noticed you were excited about the training,” Ethan linked Meadow.

She smiled down at him, and his chest softened.

“More than you can think. Nightshade wants to spend time with you badly, and I know your fegs will be better once you start shifting often,” she linked back.

Ethan raised his eyebrow and looked at her.

“Who told you that?” he linked her.

“I checked online. I read some journals, and a lot of physiotherapists testified to it. I haven’t brought it up because of Luna Amber’s surgery, but I can talk about it now that it is successful,” she linked him.

Ethan stared at her for a moment, overwhelmed by the quiet love of it. Meadow had gone searching for answers for him. She had not made noise about it. She had not tried to force hope down his throat when his mother was still in danger. She had simply looked for ways to help him and waited for the right moment. He had never imagined he could have a blissful life in his condition. He had thought his body would always be a reminder of what he had lost. But Meadow had chased away the dark clouds and brought the sun with her. She had healed his heart, his soul, his wolf and now, somehow, his body too.

She was all he had needed.

Thinking about healing made him think of his mother, and thinking of his mother made him remember Meadow’s parents. He had avoided bringing them up because he knew Meadow avoided the topic, but perhaps that was exactly why he needed to ask. He knew she might be angry at them because they had presumably worked with Amber to trick her into marrying him. He knew if she had known from the beginning that the groom was him, she might not have agreed. But he was selfish enough to be glad it had happened the way it did.

Ethan wheeled his chair towards the edge of the woods, and Meadow followed. When they reached the border that separated the land from the forest, he stopped. The air there felt different, cooler and more private.

“I want to ask you something,” Ethan said.

Meadow looked at him carefully. His tone was serious, and she knew it meant the matter was serious too.

“I know you will not like to discuss this topic, but I want you to be honest and patient,” he said.

“What is it, darling?” she asked through the link.

Ethan wheeled his chair until he faced her properly. Then he pulled her gently and made her sit on his lap. He felt the weight of

her, felt the warmth of her body settle against him, and gratitude moved through him again. He would ravage her later. He wanted

  1. Echo was already growling with his mind buried inside Meadow, but Ethan forced himself to redirect his thoughts. This

conversation mattered.

“Why haven’t you visited your parents? Why do you hate talking about them?” he asked.

Meadow froze in his arms. Her body went still so suddenly that Ethan regretted the question and knew it had been necessary at the

same time.

“Is it because they helped my mother trick you into marrying me?” he asked.

Meadow looked at him immediately and shook her head.

“Ethan, I would love and forgive them immensely if that were the case. You are the best thing that has ever happened to me. You are not the reason I do not talk about them,” she linked him.

Ethan relaxed a little. He had been wrong, and he was glad. But now he needed to know what the truth was.

“Then tell me why. I am your husband and family. I need to know why you do not visit home or invite them over,” he said.

Meadow sighed, and he felt the pain open in her before the words came.

“Honestly, your mother had nothing to do with it. My parents were the reason I had no self-esteem. My mother always shut me down with words. My father did not get involved, and I sometimes believed that he supported her conduct,” she linked.

Ethan’s arms tightened around her.

“She often told me having me was as good as not having a child. She said I was a waste of time and resources. When I was a child, she would get drunk and cry at night, asking my father to take me back to where he got me as if she did not give birth to me,”
