He snapped out of his thoughts quickly.

They waited for their order to be prepared so they could eat and head to the hospital. Victoria seemed relaxed now, laughing softly

at some silly advert playing on the diner’s screen, and Joseph found himself watching her more than he should. Not in a hungry, vulgar way. Not only that. There was something easy about her presence. She did not try too hard to impress him, even though he suspected she was trying a little. She did not weigh every word like Ashley used to. She did not make him feel trapped.

Their order finally arrived, and Ethan called Joseph just as he was about to bite into his burger.

Joseph grumbled a bit, then answered the phone.

“Where are you?” Ethan asked.

“At a diner with Victoria. We decided to grab dinner before heading to the hospital,” Joseph said.

“Why take Victoria with you?” Ethan asked.

“I can’t just sit with Leah doing nothing. We are going to compile the list of new warriors from her set together,” Joseph explained.

Ethan understood his brother.

“Very well. I just wanted to find out if you have returned to the hospital. Meadow and I will join you in the morning to relieve you

and Victoria,” Ethan said.

He hung up.

Joseph and Victoria enjoyed their meal and headed to the hospital afterwards.

When they arrived at the hospital, they headed to Amber’s room. Levi was sitting in a chair by his wife’s bedside, looking at her like the rest of the world had faded and only Amber’s breathing mattered. Leah sat on the sofa, looking tired and bored. She had clearly spent enough time watching Levi worry over Amber, and being around grumpy old Levi was not good for her psyche.

Leah’s eyes lit up when she saw Joseph.

“Hello, Alpha Joseph, you are back,” Leah said excitedly, standing up.

She greeted Victoria too.

“Leah, meet Victoria. She is Luna Meadow’s best friend,” Joseph said.

Leah extended her hand to Victoria, and Victoria shook it with a smile.

“Thank you so much for helping us save Luna’s life. May the goddess reward you greatly for this kind gesture,” Victoria said warmly.

Chapter 290

Joseph was proud of how maturely she thanked Leah. There was no awkwardness, no jealousy, no strange tone. Just honest

appreciation. Leah smiled.

“No need. I have loved Luna Amber ever since I was a child. She was really nice to my mother. It is the least I can do,” Leah

confessed.

Victoria and Leah sat on the three-seater sofa that the hospital provided at Joseph’s request. Joseph sat on a chair close to his mother’s bed and stared at her, leaving Leah and Victoria on the sofa. Victoria felt out of place but remained calm. This was family

grief, and she did not know where to put herself inside it.

Two hours passed. Within those two hours, Leah and Joseph discussed so much about Amber that Victoria felt even more out of place. Leah knew old things. Stories from her childhood. Small memories of Luna Amber being kind to her mother. Joseph asked questions, listened, even laughed once or twice in that low way of his, and Victoria sat there feeling like she had become part of the

furniture.

Not wanting to feel awkward anymore, Victoria stood up.

“I want to take a walk around the hospital to exercise my legs,” Victoria told Joseph.

Joseph looked up at her.

“That would be okay,” Joseph said.

Then, after a small pause, he added, “I will join you.”

Leah decided to stretch on the couch and get some sleep.

Victoria had not intended to break their conversation, but she was glad Joseph requested to stroll with her.
