Chapter 289
Victoria did not want to seem nosey, so she chose not to ask him why. She had questions. Many of them. Why not trust the staff? Had something else happened? Was there more to Luna Amber’s illness? But she kept quiet. If it concerned her, they would tell her.
If it did not, she would wait.
Joseph appreciated that she did not ask why he did not trust the staff. The information he gave her had been a small test to see if she was the nosey kind, but she seemed to mind her business. So far, she had only asked questions on matters that involved her. That made him respect her more. Curiosity was normal. Restraint was rare.
“We should branch somewhere to eat before we go to the hospital. I do not like hospital food,” Joseph said.
Victoria giggled.
“Where would you like to eat?” Joseph asked.
“Anywhere but a fancy restaurant. I want junk and lots of it,” Victoria replied earnestly.
Joseph laughed.
“Me too,” Joseph said, taking a turn.
Victoria was the first girl he had taken out who did not request a fancy restaurant. She was just as easy-going as Meadow. The only difference between the two was that Victoria was bold, and Meadow had once been timid. Still, Meadow had come a long way since she moved into their house, and Ethan had done an excellent job emboldening her. Joseph was still surprised that Meadow had easily negotiated the prisoners’ release. The quiet Luna had become stronger while everyone was busy underestimating her.
They reached a diner close to the hospital district and found a spot to wait for someone to take their orders. It was not fancy, but it was clean enough and smelled of fried food, grilled meat, and too much cheese. Exactly what Victoria had asked for. Joseph watched her glance through the menu, her ponytail resting against her back, her fingers tapping lightly on the table as if she already knew what she wanted but liked checking anyway.
“How did Meadow negotiate the prisoners’ release?” Joseph finally asked Victoria while she glanced through the menu.
“With me,” Victoria said, putting down the menu.
The expression on her face was hilarious, and Joseph laughed. He could only imagine Victoria’s torture, having to translate everything Meadow had to say because Rashel was also part of the people that had been locked up. Victoria did not seem like someone who enjoyed swallowing words she hated.
“First, Cynthia was angry and irritated because Ethan claimed Meadow,” Victoria said.
Joseph smiled. His brother had already told him that part. He was genuinely happy that Echo was back and delighted to learn that Ethan and Meadow were fated. Not everyone was that lucky. Most people settled down with chosen mates, building love through choice, duty, or convenience. Ethan had been blessed. After everything he had lost, the goddess had given him Meadow.

Chapter 289
Joseph could also understand Cynthia’s jealousy and anger. After nine years with Ethan and Sebastien, she remained a bare neck.
That would be enough to tip her off the edge. Cynthia craved proof that someone had chosen her forever, and the one thing she
wanted most had appeared on Meadow’s neck.
“That would have made her deny the request,” Joseph said.
Victoria nodded and laughed.
“But the Luna was occupied with something else. She was also horny as hell. We could smell it. She wanted us out of her office so
she granted Meadow’s request to get rid of us. Meadow did her share of begging and calling Cynthia Luna. The worst part was that I
had to say the words,” Victoria said.
Joseph understood her discomfort.
“I am glad you did because now those people are free,” Joseph said.
Victoria nodded.
“I would lie if I said it wasn’t worth the humiliation. I am happy they are out too,” Victoria confessed.
Someone came to take their orders.
Joseph was shocked that they were craving the same thing. A double cheese and steak burger without onions and tomato slices, fries with cheesy dip sauce, and cola. She was the first woman he had taken out who ordered the same thing as him and did not bother pretending she wanted something small because of her figure. And damn, she had a great figure. One he would like to explore with his hands and lips if life were less complicated and she were not someone who deserved more than a careless night.
