Chapter 288
He had to. He was not some untrained boy who would sit there gawking at a woman who trusted him enough to let him into her
room. Victoria had invited him in. She had not invited his hands or his imagination. He forced his gaze to the wall, then to the
floor, then anywhere except the wardrobe.
Victoria found what she was looking for and decided to dress up in the bathroom. Joseph was grateful she did not strip down before him. Other girls would have done that deliberately, especially if they sensed interest. Cynthia would have. Ashley might have, if she thought it would secure something. But Victoria was decent enough to change in the bathroom. That said a lot without her needing
to say anything.
He was grateful and realised that she was a decent girl. She was not the one-night-stand type. That alone should have made him relax, but it did the opposite. A one-night stand was all he wanted for now. Nothing serious. No strings attached. No promises.
expectations. No woman looking at him with hope he might later fail to meet.
“She is off limits,” Joseph told Rex.
Rex receded to the back of his mind, but not happily.
Soon, Victoria exited the bathroom wearing three-quarter fitted jeans, sneakers, and a tight T-shirt that showed a little cleavage. It was one of her sexier collections. She had worn it deliberately to feed Joseph’s eyes, not knowing she had already done that with her nightwear. She packed her hair in a ponytail, revealing her gorgeous face. Her brown hair was brushed neatly with no loose strands, her honey-coloured eyes were clear, and her full lips shone slightly because of the lip gloss she had applied.
She did not look like she had put in much effort, but she had, and she looked gorgeous.
Joseph had always been too busy to see that Victoria was a beauty. Since he got engaged to Ashley, he had stopped looking at other women. It had been easier that way. Cleaner. Even when his heart had not fully belonged to Ashley, his loyalty to the arrangement had made him place a wall around himself. For the first time, he saw Victoria as a woman, not just Meadow’s friend.
That was dangerous.
“Shall we?” Victoria asked.
Joseph smiled and stood up.
“Of course,” Joseph said, maintaining a calm exterior even though there was a part of him that wanted to do more than that.
They left the mansion, and Victoria linked Meadow to inform her that she would be heading to the hospital with Joseph. She was
not expecting Meadow to respond; she just wanted her friend to know. Meadow worried, and Victoria knew if she disappeared
without telling her, Meadow would link until she got a response or come looking herself.
Joseph decided to take the car this time around. Although Adam and Brian had just gotten out of the cells and wanted to follow,
Joseph refused and told them to go home and gather their strength. They had been through enough. Their bodies needed food, rest,
and recovery before anyone asked more of them.

Chapter 288
Joseph asked Victoria to sit in the passenger seat, then he went to the driver’s side. It was night-time, but he was sure they would
be fine. The roads were quieter now, and though Whitewood felt unsafe in ways it never had before, Joseph trusted his senses and
his wolf.
While they drove, Victoria decided to break the ice.
“Are you going to train me, or do you want to wait until the list is compiled to train us together?” Victoria asked.
Joseph stole a glance at her before looking back at the road.
“I don’t know. It depends on how long it would take to compile that list. Still, I do not mind training you and allowing the others to
join as we add them to the list,” Joseph said.
His response made Victoria happy. Too happy. She immediately decided, quietly, that she would slow down the compilation of the
list so they could spend time together before others joined in. She planned on calling people who lived far away first. People
unlikely to join. The easy volunteers could wait. It was not a noble strategy, but Victoria was not ashamed of it. Opportunities with
Joseph did not come every day.
“Okay, when do we start?” Victoria asked.
Joseph chuckled.
“Eager to kick butt, right?” Joseph asked.
“Yes, especially Cynthia’s butt,” Victoria said.
Joseph laughed.
“You wouldn’t need training for that,” Joseph said.
They both laughed at the woman.
“Once my mother’s operation is done, and she is recovering, we will start. Levi will keep an eye on her, and Leah will return to
Ceenas to recover fully because I do not trust our staff here,” Joseph said.
