Chapter 287
Joseph returned home from the hospital to put some things in order before returning to keep Leah company. He did not want to
leave the hospital at all; not with his mother lying there and Levi looking like he might fall apart if he breathed too hard, but there
were still things that needed his attention. Whitewood was under an enemy’s shadow, his mother’s surgery was being prepared,
Cynthia was still crawling through the mansion like borrowed poison, and Ethan’s plan required them to keep moving even when
exhaustion kept pulling at their bones.
After he was done with the documents in his room, he decided to speak to Victoria about the list that Meadow had asked her to compile. The list was important. They needed fighters they could trust, people from Meadow and Victoria’s set who had been overlooked by Beta Adam when warriors were selected. Joseph knew there were good fighters outside the official ranks. Sometimes better ones. People who had trained hard but lacked influence. People no one expected to matter. Those were the kind of people
they needed now.
He knocked on Victoria’s door, and it took a while before she answered. He waited quietly, knowing she must have been exhausted from helping Meadow attend to the prisoners who had been released. He was grateful to both Meadow and Victoria for getting Cynthia to agree to it. He was honestly worried about everyone who had been locked up. The thought of Keith, Elaine, Camila, Brad, Adam, Brian, and the workers rotting in the cells had sat badly with him. It made him feel like he had failed them, even though he
knew the timing had not been right for a fight.
The moment Victoria opened the door, her cheeks coloured.
Joseph wondered what embarrassed her, then his eyes dropped before he could stop them. He did not miss that she was wearing silk nightwear, a top with thin straps and short silk shorts with lace edges. The outfit was soft, delicate, and far too revealing for the tired, sensible friend of Meadow he had always placed in a safe corner of his mind.
It was sexy. Too sexy for comfort.
He figured that must have been the reason she was blushing. She had probably not expected him. Or perhaps she had expected him but not while dressed like that. Either way, the colour in her cheeks did something odd to him. It made her look softer. Younger. Not weak, but caught off guard in a way that made him suddenly aware that he was standing at a woman’s bedroom door at night.
“Hey,” Joseph said at the door.
Victoria smiled, unable to speak for a brief moment.
“I am heading to the hospital. Do you want to join me while we reach out to people and compile the list together?” Joseph asked.
Victoria nodded happily, almost too quickly, and Joseph noticed that too.
“You can link Meadow to inform her so she won’t look for you,” Joseph said.
Victoria stepped away from the door to let him in.
Joseph reluctantly entered her room. It was his second time there, and he felt like he was invading her privacy, but since she had

invited him in, it was okay. Still, everything about the room carried her scent. Warm. Feminine. Clean. Slightly sweet. It wrapped around him more than he expected, and for a man who had spent the last few weeks buried under war plans, betrayals, medical fear,
and Ashley’s mess, noticing a woman’s room felt almost dangerous.
Victoria was wearing micro silk shorts that almost showed the curve of her backside. Joseph only noticed fully when he sat on the couch in her room, watching her walk towards the wardrobe to get the clothes she would change into. His eyes caught the
movement before his mind could behave, and he looked a second longer than he should have.
“She has a cute ass and sexy legs,” Rex his wolf, noticed.
Joseph almost laughed internally, and the sound nearly came out as a chuckle.
“Perv,” Joseph said to Rex.
Rex growled.
“She is Meadow’s friend. If we touch her, we will have to keep her, or else Meadow and Ethan will get involved. We aren’t looking for anything serious right now,” Joseph spelt out for his wolf.
Rex growled angrily, clearly not appreciating the lecture.
While Victoria flipped through the clothes in the wardrobe, she bent down to check for a shirt that had fallen off the hanger. She did it without thinking, completely unaware of the angle or what Joseph could see from where he sat. Part of her backside showed from beneath the silk shorts, and Rex growled again.
“It would be nice to grab it,” Rex said.
Joseph looked away immediately.
