Ashley drove down the high road, worried about what would happen to her when she reached Ceenas. The road stretched ahead of

her like a long warning, dark in some places and empty enough to make her thoughts louder than the engine. Every mile she

covered took her farther from the miserable safety of her parents’ house and closer to a man who had already proven he was

dangerous enough to destroy packs without losing sleep.

Sebastien was not a simple man. He was not someone she could underestimate because he had charm, anger, strength, and a cruel

side that had shown itself clearly in Whitewood. What he had done to Whitewood and Ceenas showed the extent of his evil, or at

least the extent of the evil he was willing to carry out for the man above him. Ashley could not forget the attack at the mansion.

The chaos. The blood. The fear. The moment she herself had fallen and nearly died. She had been foolish before, but she was no so

foolish that she believed this mission would be easy.

She hoped she would be able to charm her way through and then expose his secret and his master. That was the plan. It sounded simple when Claire had said it in her head, but now that she was driving towards enemy territory, the plan felt thin and dangerous Charm a monster. Get close enough to make him talk. She had a little money, her mother’s card, her father’s truck, and the kind of desperate courage that came when someone had lost too much to be afraid properly. She would keep moving until she got there. If she stopped too long, she might start thinking. If she started thinking, she might turn back.

Ashley called her mother to find out how she was. Leaving Maya at the mercy of her father did not sit well with her. The guilt had been gnawing at her since she drove away, especially knowing the truck, money, and card would not go unnoticed for long. But Maya sounded alright on the phone, or at least she tried to sound alright, and Ashley had to accept it because she had no way of

protecting her from the road.

“I will stay in touch when I get to Ceenas,” Ashley promised her mother.

Maya was uneasy about her daughter’s mission. Ashley could hear it beneath every word, even when her mother tried to sound brave. But Maya wished her luck and told her to be careful. Although she was afraid, she hoped for the best. Maybe that was the only thing she could do now. Hope her daughter’s stubbornness would not get her killed. After a long drive, Ashley finally arrived at Ceenas borders. She slowed the truck as the first line of guards came into view. She was not surprised to see that the place was heavily guarded. That was what happened when a pack was taken over and the new owners wanted to ensure it remained theirs. Guards at the borders. Wolves watching the trees. Men standing with that hard, suspicious

posture that said no one entered without being looked through.
