Underwater: The Silent Luna novel Chapter 279

Chapter 279

The sun finally went down, and Cynthia was ready to go clubbing. She had spent the evening drinking far more than she should have, swallowing glass after glass as if the whisky could burn away the ache sitting inside her chest. It did not. It only made her tongue heavy, her thoughts slower, and her pride louder than her common sense. By the time she stood in front of the mirror, her eyes were glossy, her lips were parted around words that came out half-slurred, and yet she still told herself she looked powerful.

She did not feel powerful.

That was the problem.

She had the room. She had the title. She had warriors who answered when she called. She had Amber’s office, Amber’s wing, and the authority to threaten the McClouds inside their own home. But none of it felt the way she thought it would. No one adored her. No one feared her properly. No one wanted her for herself. Ethan looked at her like she was beneath him. Joseph looked at her like dift under his shoe. Levi treated her like a task he had to endure. And her mysterious Alpha spoke to her like she was no different from

the men he sent to guard the gates.

So Cynthia drank.

She drank because she missed Sebastien and hated herself for missing him. She drank because she missed being wanted, even in their twisted, ugly way. She drank because power without affection had become colder than she expected. She drank because loneliness had a way of making even bad memories look warm.

She was determined to try her luck with Ivy Club this time. Maybe there, at least, she could still command attention. She hoped to catch the eye of the dashing owner, who was also the manager. People talked about him. Alpha breed. Handsome. Young. Proud. From a respectable family. The kind of man who might be impressed by a woman with a title if he could overlook the mess around her. The kind of man who might help her forget that Sebastien no longer wanted her and Ethan never would again.

Before leaving, she had instructed Meadow to keep her rescue activities out of her wing. She wanted to avoid seeing the released prisoners or knowing what Meadow was doing. It annoyed her that Meadow had asked nicely and won. It annoyed her more that granting the request had been easier than continuing to maintain prisoners she had no real reason to keep. Cynthia did not want to see them thanking Meadow or looking at her with the kind of respect Cynthia had failed to earn. So she pushed the matter away.

Cynthia asked her favourite warrior, a Beta breed, to drive her to the club. He obeyed without question, and that helped her pride a little. At least someone still listened when she spoke. At least someone still lowered his head and moved when she ordered.

When she got to Ivy Club, she did not feel all right. Her head felt light, her stomach uneasy, and the alcohol in her system made the

ground seem less steady than it should have been. A sensible woman would have turned around and gone back to the mansion to

sleep it off. A sensible woman would have known she was already too drunk to manage humiliation if it came.

But Cynthia was not feeling sensible.

She went into the club.

The place became a bit silent when she walked in. Not fully silent, not immediately, but enough for her to notice. Conversations

dipped. Heads turned. People watched her with the kind of interest that was not admiration. Everyone knew what she had done and the position she held now. Everyone knew she had come with strangers and called herself Luna while Amber lay ill and Meadow still

lived. They did not like her. The dislike was thick enough to feel on her skin.

Cynthia ignored the atmospheric change and headed for the VIP section. She lifted her chin, trying to walk like the silence did not bother her. Let them stare. Let them whisper. She was Luna now, whether they liked it or not. She did not need their approval.
