Chapter 278
The wolf also missed Echo. It had taken a while for Medley to adjust to Klein, Sebastien’s wolf, but she had. Still, seeing Meadow’s
márk brought back the old bond that never became official, the old future Cynthia had ruined, and the old wolf Medley had once
leaned towards before everything went wrong.
Cynthia felt hurt looking at the scar.
Meadow got something she could not get from Ethan or Sebastien. She got claimed. There was a time Cynthia would have said a mark was like shackles trapping the bearer to a spot, but she had long realised it was anything but that. A claim/mark was freedom when given by the right person. It was proof that someone cared enough to risk forever with the bearer. It was/devotion and commitment. Something she had always suspected, deep down, that she would never truly have.
Meadow touched her mark gently, realising Cynthia’s eyes were fixed on it.
“Luna Cynthia,” Meadow signed.
Victoria reluctantly translated.
It snapped Cynthia out of her deep thought, and a scowl replaced her lost expression.
“What do you want?” Cynthia growled at Meadow.
Medley feared Nightshade, and Cynthia wondered why, but she maintained a strong facade. She did not understand why her wolf reacted that way to Meadow’s silent presence. Meadow looked harmless. Pretty. Annoying. Claimed. But harmless. Yet Medley had gone tense the moment the young Luna entered the room.
“Please, Luna, release our workers and friends. They pose no threat to you. You locked my therapist and her husband up down there too. There is no one there that would fight you or challenge your authority, I promise you,” Meadow signed.
Victoria translated, though her voice carried reluctance.
“Why do you think I will listen to you?” Cynthia asked.
Meadow looked at her steadily.
“Because I know you aren’t gaining anything from them being there. I also know that my husband and his brother are too proud to continue asking. Please do not let these people suffer. You have all you want already. No one is fighting or challenging you. Other than Keith, Adam, and Brian, there is no one there that threatens you. Since Ethan and Joseph have conceded, Keith, Adam, and
Brian would not bother. Please, Luna,” Meadow signed with pleading eyes.
Victoria translated every word.
Cynthia stared at her.

Chapter 278
The annoying thing was that Meadow was telling the truth. Cynthia was not gaining anything from keeping those people locked up except the small pleasure of knowing it bothered the McCloud brothers. They had not fought. They had not challenged her openly. They had remained frustratingly calm, and the people in the cells were only becoming one more thing she had to manage. She was not in the mood to banter with anyone because of her horny, miserable state. She wanted the conversation over.
So she quickly agreed. She granted Meadow’s request and linked the Kappa warriors guarding the cells to release the prisoners.
“Is that all, mute?” Cynthia asked.
Meadow nodded and signed a thank you.
It took a lot of effort and courage for Meadow to rein in her pride and anger and beg, but she knew allowing their friends and the staff to rot in the cells like that would be unfair. She had not expected Cynthia to oblige, but she was glad she asked. Meadow realised Cynthia was truly a horrible person because it was clear from her behaviour that she had no real reason to lock the people up in the first place. She had done it because she could. Because cruelty made her feel powerful.
Meadow decided she would ask them all to leave and return to their various homes to keep them away from harm’s way. They had suffered enough inside the mansion. If Cynthia had no use for them, then they needed distance. Safety. A chance to breathe.
She planned to wait for Ethan to return so he could give the directions. In the meantime, she and Victoria put themselves to work
to ensure their friends and workers were cared for while they waited for Ethan to return.
