Underwater: The Silent Luna novel Chapter 264

Chapter 264

Ethan was at his computer dealing with some business document, but he picked up her scent the moment she entered. Rage stirred

in him immediately. It came fast, old, and hot, pressing against the careful control he had been holding all day. His wolf reacted too,

not loudly, but enough for Ethan to feel the danger of his own temper. He forced himself to remain composed.

“What do you want, Cynthia?” Ethan asked without turning his chair.

Cynthia pretended to be hurt and made herself comfortable on his couch. She could smell Meadow in the room, but she ignored the scent. Or tried to. The scent was everywhere. Soft, feminine, present. It belonged in the room now in a way Cynthia never had. That

alone irritated her.

Although Cynthia was no longer with Ethan, Meadow’s scent made her jealous. She had heard people speak of Meadow and learned she was a stunning woman. The pictures of Ethan and Meadow in the room confirmed the woman’s beauty, and the way Ethan looked at his wife in the photos demonstrated his love for her. That was what truly hurt. The affection in his eyes. The warmth. The

peace. The kind of tenderness Cynthia had once believed belonged only to her.

The sight of the pictures made her stomach churn, and she began to regret coming to Ethan’s room. Still, she composed herself

regardless of what she was feeling.

Deep down, Cynthia knew that if Ethan had not handed the pack over to Joseph, she would have remained with him. Out of everyone she had been with, Ethan was the only man who had truly owned her heart. He had known the right things to say and do. He had genuinely loved her and would have done anything for her. He had loved her when he was powerful, and she had expected him to rise again for her. But he did not. Or that was what she told herself.

She wondered if he was that way with Meadow. If he had transferred that love to the mute, or if he had simply chosen to accept the situation and cherish what he had. The thought made her chest ache. Cynthia had broken her own heart when she left Ethan. She knew that now, even if she hated admitting it. It was always a lie whenever she told herself it had been for the best.

“Why couldn’t you just walk, Ethan? Why did you give up and hand the pack over to Joseph? We were so good together, and we were

happy. Why didn’t you try?” Cynthia asked.

Ethan turned his chair slowly to look at her where she sat on his couch. For a moment, he only stared. He could not believe the madness of the question. Why couldn’t he just walk? As if he had chosen the chair. As if seven years of pain, humiliation, damaged nerves, and silver in his spine had been laziness. As if she had been the victim of his paralysis.

“All you had to do was get up and walk, and I wouldn’t have gone to Sebastien and ended up like this. You promised me you would walk, but you failed me. Echo failed me,” Cynthia said on the verge of tears.

Ethan chuckled.

It was not amusement. It was disbelief sharpened into sound.

“I believe you are mentally unstable, Cynthia. You were the one that failed us. You walked away because I stepped down as Alpha for Joseph. You gave up on me, and I had to move on. Do not come into my room and make it seem like I deliberately refused to walk,

Cynthia,” Ethan said, laughing.

Cynthia looked at him, wounded and furious at the same time.

“If you had put some effort into your legs, you wouldn’t be stuck with that mute. It is sad to see a powerful man like you reduced to

nothing. I learned your mother tricked the mute into marrying you, and she was meant to be your live-in nanny and baby machine.

How low do you need to fall? I will leave the Alpha for you if you get on your feet now. Regardless of where this goes, I will leave

him for you,” Cynthia said.

She meant the words. Ethan heard that, and it almost made it worse. She truly believed she was offering him something valuable.

She truly believed that after everything, after betraying him, humiliating him, joining an attack against his pack, and calling his wife

a mute in his room, she could still place herself before him like a prize.

Ethan’s eyes hardened.
