Cynthia nodded and stood up. Listening to Levi, she believed she could manipulate him, but she decided to play it safe for now and

know his true intentions. Levi could see the calculation in her eyes. She was not as clever as she thought, but fear had sharpened

her a little. Good. Fear made people careful, but it also made them desperate.

“The Alpha is yet to give me directives. Once he does, I will inform you,” Cynthia told him.

Levi sighed.

“So, how come you are Luna? Aren’t you supposed to be mated to him?” Levi asked.

Cynthia smiled.

“All in due time,” Cynthia replied.

Levi knew there was a possibility she was being played, but he kept it to himself. It was written all over the situation. Cynthia had been given a title without a mate, authority without security, and danger without protection beyond borrowed warriors. She was sitting in Amber’s office calling herself Luna for a man whose name she did not even know. It was foolish, but Cynthia had always mistaken proximity to power for power itself.

“In the meantime, I hope we can be friends and trust each other. We have to be united if we will achieve anything here. The McClouds are fickle-minded and tricky,” Cynthia said.

Levi wondered what she meant by trusting each other. She wanted him useful, that was all. She wanted an inside man who knew Whitewood and could help her understand a house she had entered by force. She wanted him wounded enough to betray Ethan and Joseph. He nodded, saying nothing, and the awkward silence between them made him decide to leave.

Levi excused himself and returned to his bedroom to prepare to go to the hospital. Cynthia did not stop him.

At the same time, Cynthia sat in Amber’s office, surrounded by a position that still did not feel fully hers. The room was grand enough. Powerful enough. It had Amber’s scent, Amber’s history, Amber’s confidence in every corner. Cynthia hated that. She wondered how she would keep her position as Luna because the Alpha did not speak to her in the manner that would put her mind at ease. He had spoken to her like one of his minions, as if she was nothing to him. And the painful truth was that she knew she did

not mean shit to the man. At least not yet.

She had two options. Find a strong way out, or impress the Alpha in a way that would make him view her as indispensable. Since the first option was not yet available, she would play it safe until he gave her reason to do otherwise. She had lost Sebastien. She had burned too many bridges. She had to make this work because failure now would leave her with nothing and no one.

Cynthia missed Sebastien and wondered how he was faring in Ceenas. The thought annoyed her because she did not want to miss him. He had slapped her, insulted her, treated her like dirt, and walked away from her. Yet the silence he left behind still followed her. She wanted to call him, but she knew he would not appreciate it. He meant what he said, and she knew he would not go back on his words. The thought alone made her feel lonely. She hoped her new Alpha would not double-cross her.

Chapter 263

Knowing Ethan and Joseph had returned, Cynthia decided to visit Ethan in his room. Gaining their trust was one of the assignments

given to her. Although she knew it would be impossible, she needed to try. The Alpha had not asked if it was easy. He had given an

order, and Cynthia had already learned that saying no to him was not an option.

Cynthia left Amber’s office and headed to Ethan’s wing.

While she walked, she wondered why Ethan’s wife had not returned to the mansion. She looked forward to Meadow’s return because

she had instructed the warriors to lock her up. Depending on her interactions with Ethan, she would use Meadow to force his loyalty. She did not believe Ethan would stay calm if his mute wife was harmed or threatened. Men always had soft spots. Ethan’s

softness used to be her. Now, apparently, it was Meadow.

The thought made jealousy crawl under her skin.

She opened Ethan’s door without knocking when she got to his room.
