Chapter 262
Levi was reluctant to go to Amber’s office and report to the new Luna of Whitewood. Every step towards that office felt like an insult pressed against his pride, his loyalty, and everything he had spent seventeen years protecting. Amber’s office belonged to
Amber. Her scent should have been there. Her authority should have filled it. Her sharp voice should have been the one giving
orders from behind that desk, not Cynthia’s greedy mouth. The thought of walking in there and standing before that woman like she
had any real right over him made his wolf restless with disgust.
He would rather be in the hospital with Amber. That was where he belonged. Beside her bed. Watching her breathe. Holding her
hand while they searched for another donor. He wanted to be there in case she moved, in case her eyes opened, in case she
somehow felt alone in that unconscious silence. Unfortunately for him, they had a plan, and he needed to follow through. If Cynthia
believed he was still wounded by Joseph’s words and isolated from the McCloud brothers, she might loosen her tongue. If the
unknown Alpha believed his trick had worked, he might reveal more. So Levi had to act. He had to swallow his anger and a role
he never wanted.

Getting to Amber’s office, Levi knocked on the door.
Cynthia’s voice came through, permitting him to enter.
Levi opened the door and found the so-called Luna sitting on the couch in the office, not behind the desk. He noticed that immediately. Either she did not feel secure enough to take Amber’s chair yet, or she wanted to make a show of not needing it. Either way, it irritated him. She was in Amber’s space. Sitting where Amber should have been. Breathing the air of a room she had
no right to occupy.
Cynthia looked at him and smiled.
“Alpha Levi, welcome,” Cynthia said, pointing at the visitor’s chair in front of the desk.
Levi did not move immediately. The title sounded wrong coming from her mouth. Alpha Levi. He had worn that title once for duty, for Cain, for Amber, for the boys. Now she said it like a leash given by her unseen master.
“Turn it around and face me, Alpha,” Cynthia ordered, unwilling to sit behind the desk.
Levi did as she requested and looked at her, awaiting his orders. He kept his face blank because if he allowed even half of what he felt to show, she would know he would rather snap her neck than listen to her.
“Congratulations,” Cynthia said.
Levi could not smile. There was nothing to be grateful for. Even if Cynthia could not see it, he knew it. The title had come wrapped in suspicion, humiliation, and family fracture. The position had been designed to make Ethan and Joseph doubt him. It had worked, even if only for a moment, and that made him hate the unknown Alpha even more.
“By now, you are done with the McClouds. See how quickly they turned on you. So much for putting family first. They can never accept you as part of their family, and I am glad you experienced the treatment,” Cynthia said.

Chapter 262
She crossed her legs sensually, as if she expected him to look. Levi did not. He kept his eyes fixed on her face. Cynthia was
beautiful, he supposed, in the way snakes could look beautiful before they struck. But there was nothing in her that moved him. Not
temptation. Not curiosity. Only irritation.
“Ethan once told me you were the prime suspect in the murder of their father. I wonder how you survived with them, knowing they
saw you as a leech and opportunist,” Cynthia said.
Even though her words did not truly get to Levi, he knew it would be best to pretend they had. He needed her confidence. He needed her to believe the wedge her Alpha had driven into the McCloud family had gone deep enough to turn him/bitter. If she thought he was hurt, she might try to use the hurt. If she tried to use it, she might say too much.
Levi frowned and looked away, pretending to be annoyed.
“Joseph was ready to blame you,” Cynthia added, believing she had gotten to him.
“I am over that shit. What does your Alpha want, Cynthia?” Levi asked quickly.
Cynthia laughed.
“Our Alpha,” Cynthia corrected.
Levi cringed.
“I haven’t met him yet, and neither have I interacted with him, so he remains your Alpha for now,” Levi corrected.
