“Let me come home. I promise not to make trouble with Cynthia, but I do not want to go to my parents’ house now. I will have to

go there eventually because of our plan, but not tonight,” she signed.

Ethan did not want to hurt her feelings by saying no. He also knew forcing her to face her parents while she was already

emotionally exhausted would be cruel. So he caved.

“Okay. Come home. But you will have to go there at some point,” he told her.

Meadow agreed and hung up.

Meadow and Victoria waited for two hours before Dr Rosenberg’s nephew came to relieve them. The wait was quiet but not peaceful. Meadow watched Amber, checked the time, thought of Ethan, thought of Cynthia in the mansion, and thought of her parents’ house waiting somewhere in her future like a door she did not want to open. Victoria, sensing her friend’s mood, did not push too much. When Dr Rosenberg’s nephew finally arrived, Meadow and Victoria left the hospital and headed to the mansion.

When Joseph arrived at Ethan’s wing, he went to Ethan’s room because Ethan had requested to see him. He entered the place and found his brother sitting at the computer. Ethan turned his chair around and wheeled it to the sitting section. He looked calm, but Joseph knew better. Ethan’s calm had become strategic now. It was the kind that came from holding violence behind a locked door.

“You asked me to come,” Joseph said, sitting on the couch.

“Have you seen Cynthia?” Ethan asked.

He wondered if Joseph might have encountered her on his way to the wing, but Joseph shook his head.

“It is as if she isn’t here. The only giveaway is the lack of staff and the warriors she has stationed everywhere. Honestly, I do not want to lose. That is why I have not attacked her and her warriors. If it weren’t for the fact that we are waiting for you to recover, I

would have killed Cynthia,” Joseph said.

Ethan nodded.

“It is taking a lot for me to turn the other cheek too, Joseph, but we must focus on the real villain, her Alpha. Every other thing is

secondary,” Ethan said.

Joseph leaned forward and rested both elbows on his thighs. He put his hands together and looked ahead, his face hard. He hated this. Hated waiting. Hated acting weak. Hated knowing Cynthia was somewhere inside the same mansion where his mother’s portraits hung and his family’s history lived. But Ethan was right. Killing Cynthia now would satisfy rage and possibly ruin strategy.

“If you say so, Ethan, I will follow, but I must tell you, that girl needs to be put down,” Joseph said.

Ethan nodded.

“I agree, but that isn’t why I called you,” Ethan said.

Joseph looked at him curiously.

“We need to find out why Sebastien was sent to Ceenas. We need to figure out why the Alpha no longer favours Sebastien. We need to understand why he would choose a weak Cynthia over Sebastien. We also have to communicate with Alpha Malcolm and figure

out his stance before we propose a partnership,” Ethan said.

Joseph looked at him. As crazy as it sounded, it sounded like a plan. Not a complete one yet, but the bones were there. Understand the split between Cynthia and Sebastien. Use Levi’s forced position to get closer to the hidden Alpha’s instructions. Reach out to Malcolm carefully. Build allies before making any open move. Wait until Ethan could stand again, then strike with purpose instead

of anger.

“If we gather like this, we would have a fighting chance,” Joseph said, agreeing with his brother’s idea.

It sounded like a good plan, but the tricky part would be implementing it.
