Agnes was shocked by the decision the brothers made. She had not expected them to decide so quickly, not after hearing that she

was a match, not after seeing Amber lying there in a coma with death breathing close to her bed. She had expected hesitation.

Begging. Bargaining. Maybe even Ethan kneeling in his own way, offering her money, property, protection, anything she wanted as

long as she saved his mother. What she had not expected was for them to reject her liver as if the thing she offered did not carry

the power to keep Amber alive.

And she had not expected Levi to come clean.

That hurt more than the rejection. Her power over him had always rested in secrecy. For years, the secret had been the chain sh held. It was the one thing that made Levi answer her calls, send money, show up when she demanded, and soften his voice even when he did not want to. Now he had exposed it himself. He had opened the wound in front of everyone, and just like that, the power she thought she had over him became almost useless.

She looked at Levi with tears, and her mouth quivered.

“I loved you with all my heart, and you know it. To leave me for a woman that treated you like shit and made you compete with a dead man is wrong and cruel, Levi. She will never love you like I will. She will never give you what you want. You want a home, but Amber will never give you that. She has nothing to offer because she gave it all to Cain,” Agnes said, tears streaming down her face.

The words were bitter, and the pain behind them was real, but so was the poison. Meadow could hear both. Agnes was not lying about loving Levi in her own twisted way, but her love had become something ugly a long time ago. It wanted to own. It wanted to punish. It wanted Amber to wake and find the one man who had stayed beside her gone because Agnes had finally found something valuable enough to trade.

Levi looked at Amber where she lay peacefully on the hospital bed, then at Agnes. His face softened when his eyes landed on Amber, and that alone gave Agnes her answer before he even spoke. There was no confusion in him. No torn longing. No hidden wish to return to a life with Agnes. Whatever had tied him to her was history, guilt, blackmail, and a daughter whose paternity still hung in doubt. What tied him to Amber was love.

“Amber gave me everything and much more, Agnes. I was never competing with Cain where she was concerned. I have a family and two wonderful men I am proud to say I helped raise. I might not be their biological father, and they might not bear my last name, but they are still my sons, regardless,” Levi said calmly.

Ethan looked away for a brief moment because those words touched a place in him he was still too angry and too raw to deal with properly. Joseph lowered his gaze too. After accusing Levi of everything, hearing him still claim them as sons made shame sit

heavier between them.

“You know what we had was physical, and you knew I wasn’t going to commit to you, so do not make it seem like something was stolen from you, Agnes. You were the one that tried to steal from Amber,” Levi said.

Agnes’s face changed. She looked at Amber where she lay, and all the grief in her expression turned into rage. It came fast, hot and bitter, as if Amber’s peaceful unconscious body insulted her by still being loved.

The rage in her voice got to everyone.
