Chapter 250
Dr Rosenberg called Ethan, and Meadow stood quietly while he spoke. Agnes watched her with eyes that made Meadow’s skin prickle. It was not fear exactly. Not anymore. It was the discomfort of being seen by someone who knew a piece of her past, whether Agnes understood what Meadow had witnessed or not.
Dr Rosenberg ended the call, satisfied with Ethan’s response.
“He is on his way,” Dr Rosenberg said.
Meadow nodded.
She did not know if speaking of this to Ethan would be safe, but she hoped Levi would come clean eventually. The memory still haunted her. She did not think of it every day now, but it had never truly left. It had only gone quiet because Levi became a frequent face in her life. Because the threat became a man who sat at tables, spoke to Ethan, moved around Amber, helped hold the McCloud family together. Familiarity had dulled the fear, but it had not erased it.
She remembered what she had witnessed.
She remembered Levi seeing her.
She remembered him threatening her to be silent and keep it to herself.
Whenever she had seen Levi after that, in the early days, that feeling returned. The fear. The warning. The image of him silencing her. Then slowly, because he was always around and because life had a cruel way of making even frightening people ordinary, it stopped rising so sharply. But seeing Agnes immediately brought it all back. Something she had dared not speak of for fear of her safety and that of her family.
“Shall we wait in Luna Amber’s room so that they can meet us there?” Dr Rosenberg asked.
Meadow agreed immediately. She needed to be around someone she felt safe with. Although she had no issues with the doctor, the atmosphere around Agnes felt unsafe. It was not only Agnes herself. It was what she represented. Secrets. Old pain. A bargain that could save Amber’s body and break her heart.
They left the small office and returned to Amber’s room.
Meadow went to sit beside Victoria and gazed at Amber while she lay peacefully on the bed. Her eyes stayed on the Luna’s face, taking in the softness that unconsciousness had placed there. Without her sharp voice and commanding eyes, Amber looked almost vulnerable. Human. A woman whose body had carried too much while pretending it was fine.
Meadow admired her strength and perseverance and wondered if she could ever wear her shoes. Amber had been through so much and done so much. She had carried grief for Cain, raised sons in the shadow of a murdered mate, accepted Levi beside her while still holding on to the past, protected Whitewood in her own flawed way, and hidden her sickness because she did not want to worry anyone Meadow did not agree with every choice Amber had made, but she could not deny the woman’s strength.

Chapter 250
It would be sad for her to go like this.
Meadow stared at her and did not realise when tears began to roll down her cheeks. They came silently, warm and humiliating,
slipping down before she could stop them. She was not only crying for Amber. She was crying for Ethan, for Joseph, for Levi, for the family being pulled apart by secrets, for the poison inside the house, for the weight of being a Luna when she still felt like a
frightened girl in many ways.
Victoria touched Meadow’s hand and squeezed gently.
“Be strong, Luna,” Victoria said.
The words were soft but carried a reminder. Meadow was not only Meadow here. She was Luna Meadow. People were watching. In times like this, tears could be misunderstood as weakness. Victoria was reminding her of the office she occupied, and that it would be wrong for people to see her break down when the family needed strength.
“She is a strong woman. She will make it,” Victoria said.
Agnes chuckled under her breath.
It was subtle, very subtle, but Meadow caught it. Her head turned slightly, and for a moment she wanted to react. She wanted to ask Agnes what was funny. She wanted to tell her that Amber’s life was not a joke, that her strength was not something to mock under her breath. But Meadow held herself still.
As much as she wanted to react, she had to let it go. Just as the doctor had said, Agnes was Amber’s only hope. They would have to bear with the woman for now. Sometimes survival required swallowing pride. Meadow hated that lesson, but she was learning it too
well.
Ethan arrived at the hospital and went straight to the ward where his mother was kept. He had a goal, and he hoped he could achieve it. The Kappa with him could not keep up as Ethan wheeled himself briskly through the floor into the elevator that would take him to the floor Amber was on. The chair moved fast under his hands and the automated control, but even that speed did not feel enough. Ethan hated moving quickly and still feeling like he was not moving quickly enough.
He moved with purpose. He knew deep down how much his mother had come to love and adore Levi even though she tried to hide it. Amber had never been simple with her emotions. She covered softness with authority, affection with irritation, fear with control. But Ethan knew her. He knew she hid her emotions from them for their benefit. Or perhaps because loving Levi too openly felt like betraying Cain’s memory. Either way, Ethan knew she was crazy about the guy.
And who would not be?
Levi had given up everything to be with her. He helped her keep her home and Cain’s legacy. He raised Cain’s sons as if they were his own and never asked for anything. As too good to be true as it sounded, Levi was a great guy. Difficult, yes. Proud, yes. Sometimes overbearing, yes. But he had been there. He had stayed when leaving would have been easier. He had become father, protector, trainer, husband, shield, and punching bag for grief that had never truly belonged to him.
Ethan would not let this woman, a blast from Levi’s past, take that joy from his mother. He would try to persuade her to think otherwise. He would offer money. Protection. Anything reasonable. Anything that did not involve Levi leaving Amber when she woke

up from fighting death.
Ethan got to the room and wheeled in gradually.
Meadow saw him and was about to get up to meet him where he was when he linked her to remain seated. She obeyed, though her eyes followed him carefully. He noticed her puffy eyes and knew his mother’s health condition had gotten to his wife. Just like his mother, Meadow’s emotions rätt deep. It was safe to say Amber had gotten him a younger version of herself. Meadow could be quiet, but silence did not mean shallow feeling. It meant the feelings went inward and settled deep.
