Chapter 251

Ethan saw the woman he believed to be Agnes.

She was a blue-eyed blonde beauty. The kind of woman people noticed even when they did not want to. She looked almost ageless, and Amber’s beauty paled compared to hers in the most obvious, physical way. It was a miracle that Levi would leave such a woman for their mother. Ethan knew his mother was beautiful, but Amber’s beauty was different. Stronger. Warmer with age. Sharper with life. Agnes had that youthful look that could make time look like it had favoured her unfairly.

But beauty did not move Ethan. Not this kind. Not when his mother’s life and happiness were on the table.

“Agnes Thomas,” he said sternly.

His voice carried authority, but also enough respect that she got off her chair to greet him. She seemed to understand that although Ethan sat in a wheelchair, the Alpha in him had not left. If anything, his presence made the foom smaller.

“Good afternoon, Alpha,” Agnes said.

Her voice did not look like her at all. It did not match the smoothness of her face or the softness of her beauty. It was not the type of voice anyone should listen to before bed or wake up to in the morning. She tried to sound alluring, but it came out completely wrong. The crack in the sound made it seem like she had a dry throat and needed water. Some men might find that attractive, but

Ethan did not.

“I have heard that you want to help my mother out,” Ethan said.

Agnes nodded.

“And what is your price?” he asked.

She frowned.

“I beg your pardon, Alpha?” Agnes asked.

Ethan smiled because he knew she was pretending not to understand what he was saying. He had no patience for games today. Not hers. Not Levi’s. Not Cynthia’s. Not anyone’s.

“I mean, what is your price? What do you want in exchange for this kind of gesture?” he asked her.

Agnes smiled then, knowing the way he put it meant she could not shy away from the question, nor could she pretend not to

understand him.

“I have discussed my price with Beta Levi,” Agnes said respectfully.

“That is great, but as you have said, he is a Beta. I am Alpha, so now I am asking you. What is your price for helping my mother?

Name it, and I will give you,” he said.

Agnes bowed her head, not knowing how to tell him that she had already stated her terms to Levi and he had accepted. Ethan watched her carefully. He could see the hesitation, the calculation, the attempt to decide how much truth to give and how much to

place on Levi’s shoulders.

“I do not know if Beta has told you of our history,” she said.

Meadow was surprised that the woman had referenced Levi in her conversation with Ethan. The way she said our history sounded too intimate for a hospital room where Amber lay fighting for life. It carried ownership. Old claim. A reminder that she had been there before Amber in some way, even if Amber was the wife now.

“I am listening, madam,” Ethan told her.

He said madam deliberately, and Meadow almost smiled despite herself. It was subtle, but not kind. He wanted Agnes to feel old, even though she looked nothing like it. He wanted to take the shine off her ageless beauty, to remind her that whatever games she thought she could play, he saw her as a woman old enough to know exactly what she was doing.

“Madam,” Agnes repeated, touching her cheek as if feeling for invisible age lines that had made Ethan refer to her that way.

Ethan remained expressionless.

“I think it is best Beta Levi tells you my price. It would be better if it came from him,” Agnes said, pushing the responsibility back

to Levi.

Ethan shook his head.

“Leaving his wife for you is out of the question,” Ethan said sternly.

The room tightened.

Agnes felt intimidated, and for the first time, something flickered behind her composed face. Meadow looked from Ethan to Agnes, and Victoria, though confused about the full details, felt enough tension to sit straighter.

“You are taking more than you are giving. He is trying to get her better so they can have a happy life together. She is just forty- nine, so they can still have children if they want. The only reason they hung around was because of my condition,” Ethan said.

His voice did not rise, but the command in it did. He was not pleading yet. Not exactly. He was stating truth like a man used to being obeyed, even while sitting in a chair.

“I believe you have heard what has happened to the pack, so their presence would not be needed anymore. I am happy to pay you handsomely for this kind gesture, but do not take my mother’s husband from her. She would hate that liver if you do,” he said.

Agnes was in a tight position. She did not want to talk back to the Alpha, nor did she want to accept money and give up what she had demanded from Levi. She stared at Ethan, contemplating how best to address the matter between them. Her eyes moved to

Meadow, and Meadow felt the weight of that glance like a hand around an old secret.

Agnes knew Meadow knew what was happening.

She also knew Meadow had not told her husband anything yet, which meant Levi was yet to spill the beans.

“I need an answer, madam. Name your price,” Ethan said, a bit impatient.

Agnes composed herself and decided to speak. She damned the consequences even though she feared him. Her chin lifted slightly,, and the softness left her face. For the first time, she looked less like a beautiful woman bargaining with grief and more like someone

who had carried a bitter truth for too long.

Then she opened up to speak.
