Chapter 248

“Luna Meadow, may I speak with you for a moment, please?” Doctor Rosenberg asked.

Meadow looked up from where she sat beside Victoria in Amber’s hospital room. The Luna was still lying peacefully on the bed, too still for a woman who had always carried herself like she could command the room with one sharp look. The machines around her made soft sounds, steady enough to comfort and frighten at the same time. Meadow had been watching her quietly, praying in the only way she knew how, hoping the woman would hold on long enough for the donor issue to be solved.

She turned to Dr Rosenberg and nodded.

“Yes, you can,” she linked him, knowing it would be okay for him to know of her progress since he had proven his loyalty to the

McClouds.

Dr Rosenberg froze.

The shock on his face was almost comical despite the seriousness of the moment. His eyes widened so much Meadow thought they might pop out of their sockets. His lips parted, but no words came out. He looked at her as if she had suddenly stood up from the chair and started speaking aloud after years of silence. In a way, it was almost that shocking. Meadow understood. For years, everyone had known her as the quiet Luna who communicated with her hands and eyes. Now she had reached into his mind like any

other wolf with an active link.

He knew then that Camila had made some progress with their young Luna.

“It’s still a secret no one knows, but I know I can trust you,” Meadow linked him.

Dr Rosenberg composed himself immediately. He was a doctor first, and he knew how to lock surprise away when the situation demanded it. His face settled, though his eyes still held wonder. He gave her a respectful nod, accepting both the honour and the responsibility of the secret she had just trusted him with.

“I would like you to view some documents in my office, Luna. I am sure you can write whatever you want to tell me. Unfortunately, what I need to show you is highly confidential, so your friend would not be permitted,” he said quickly.

Victoria smiled at Meadow and the doctor to let them know it was okay. She did not look offended. If anything, she looked amused by the seriousness of the doctor’s tone, as if Luna matters were some grand thing Meadow had to attend to now. Meadow loved that about Victoria sometimes. She could bring lightness into places that had forgotten what light felt like.

“I will watch over Luna. You can go do Luna stuff,” Victoria said jovially to Meadow.

Meadow smiled a little, but beneath it came a tinge of guilt. She felt terrible that she was hiding her progress from her friend. Victoria had stood by her through too much to be kept outside such a major truth. But Meadow knew it was for the best. The less Victoria knew, the safer she would be. Victoria was loyal, yes, but loyalty could make a person reckless. If Victoria learned about the compulsion, about Meadow linking again, about all the strange pieces of her past coming undone, she would worry loudly and dangerously. Meadow could not handle that right now. Not when the whole house was already unsafe.

Chapter 248

So she stood and followed Dr Rosenberg.

Meadow and Dr Rosenberg went to an office on the same floor. He did not want to take her away from Amber’s ward or his patients, and perhaps he did not want her too far from the people who made her feel safe. Meadow appreciated that even without saying it. The hospital corridor smelled of antiseptic, medicine, and old fear. People moved quietly around them, nurses with files, patients’ relatives with tired faces, staff who still bowed their heads slightly when they saw her.

Meadow’s hands remained calm at her sides, but her mind was not calm. Confidential documents. A private office. Dr Rosenberg’s serious expression. After everything that had happened, nothing private felt harmless anymore.
