The moment Levi disappeared into his room, Ethan turned on his brother, his anger no longer hidden.

“Why would you accuse him publicly like that?” he asked.

Joseph was tongue-tied.

He wanted to defend himself. He wanted to say the facts lined up. He wanted to say Cynthia named Levi. He wanted to say Uncle Linus had warned them. He wanted to say their father’s death, Amber’s poisoning, Ethan’s accident and Levi’s disappearance had all sat together too neatly to ignore. But none of that erased the fact that he had humiliated a man who had been trying to save their

mother.

“He fit the bill, and she named him Alpha,” Joseph said.

Ethan became angrier.

“He did not need to do all this to take over,” Ethan pointed out.

“But Uncle Linus said…” Joseph started.

Ethan shut him up immediately. He was livid.

“Where was Linus when father died? Who was there for us? Who was fighting away attackers and keeping things together? We have more memories with Levi than we did with our father. Yes, he can be a douchebag, but it is understandable, having to fill big shoes all the time. Who was there for us, Joseph? Even now, who is there?” Ethan asked him.

Joseph did not need anyone to tell him the answer to Ethan’s question.

Levi.

It had always been Levi.

The thought hurt because it was true. Their memories of Cain were precious, but fewer. Their memories of Levi were woven into the practical shape of their lives. Training. Discipline. Protection. Duty. Lectures. Arguments. Quiet support. Presence. When Cain died, Levi had not become Cain, but he had stood in the place grief left empty and made sure they did not fall through it.

“You better fix this shit. There is no way we can catch this bastard divided. I will see how I can persuade this Agnes woman to accept money and leave Levi alone while you patch things up with him. We need everyone to withstand their might, and mother will not be happy when she wakes up to a pending divorce,” Ethan said.

Joseph remained at the door of his mother’s room, waiting for Levi to exit so he could apologise to the man and plead with him to

find a way to remain with their mother. He knew the man was done, but he would try. He had caused this, and he had to fix it.

Regardless of the outcome, Levi would have had to leave their mother for the donor to come through. A deal was a deal. Hopefully,

Ethan would convince Agnes otherwise.

Joseph remained at the door for thirty minutes until Levi stepped out of the room dressed up. Those thirty minutes felt long. Too long. He spent them hearing his own words again. Traitor. Bastard. Murderer. Poisoner. He wished He could pull them back. He

wished he had waited. Asked. Listened. Anything but what he had done.

“I am sorry,” Joseph said.

Levi shook his head.

“There is no point in apologising. I have always been the outsider in this family. It is time I accept it and move on,” he said.

Joseph held his hand and stopped him.

“When I fought the attackers and surrendered, the first thing that came to my mind was what you taught us. I have known you longer than my father. What I said was out of line, and I apologise, but please do not see yourself as an outsider. You are a member of this family just as we are your family too,” Joseph said.

His voice was low, but the words came from somewhere honest. Somewhere stripped of pride. Levi looked at him, and Joseph held on because if he let go too quickly, it would feel like losing more than an argument.

“Let us talk to this Agnes and have her change her mind. I promise we will never doubt or suspect you again. This was all me. Ethan had no hand in it. Let me fix what I broke,” Joseph pleaded.

Levi knew it was hard for Joseph to say those words. Joseph was not a man who begged easily. He did not apologise unless the apology had cost him something. Levi could see the shame in him, the panic, the child under the Alpha who did not want to lose

another parent.

Even without Joseph accusing him, Levi would still have had to leave because a deal was a deal. That was the painful truth. Joseph had broken something, yes, but the bargain with Agnes had already placed a blade between Levi and Amber.

“I have roughly six months with your mother before our divorce comes through. I will like to live it in peace, Joseph. I am not mad anymore. I know that Cain would be proud of you two, and when I die and we meet again, I can proudly tell him that I did my best,”

he said.

Joseph knew the conversation was over.

He felt like a child having to let go of a parent. Even though Levi would be around for six months, he had already left them because of the promise he made to Agnes. That realisation hurt badly. It was not dramatic. It did not come with shouting. It was simply

there, heavy and final.

“Let me join you at the hospital,” Joseph requested.

“What about Luna Cynthia?” Levi asked with a mocking tone.

Joseph shrugged.

“Deal with it later,” he said.

He did not want to refer to Cynthia as person, not at that moment. Secretly, Joseph hoped Ethan would convince Agnes not to take

their stepfather from them. They needed Levi to deal with Cynthia and her boss. They also knew their mother needed him the most.

Amber might be stubborn enough to pretend otherwise, but she needed him. She had always needed him, even when she refused to

show it cleanly.

Damn Uncle Linus for planting ideas in their heads.

The man was angry that they had never caught the person who murdered his cousin. It was typical behaviour of a family member

looking for someone to blame. Joseph knew he had done precisely what Linus had done. He had taken grief, suspicion, fear, and

anger, then placed it all on Levi because it made the pain easier to point at.

He had accused Levi of everything.
