Chapter 245
It came slowly at first, like something crawling up his throat, then all at once. He had accused Levi of poisoning Amber while Levi
had been trying to save her life. He had called him a traitor when the man had been chasing the one thing that could keep his
mother alive. He had let Cynthia’s statement and Uncle Linus’s old suspicion twist everything into a shape that now looked ugly in
the light.
“Did you find the person?” Joseph asked.
Levi nodded.
“Agnes, my ex,” he confessed.
The name entered the air quietly, but Ethan immediately knew something had to give. A former lover. A woman from Levi’s past. donor willing to risk part of herself for Amber. There was no way that kind of help came without a cost.
“I went to plead with her to help. I have been pleading with her for months now. She agreed to help yesterday,” Levi finally said.
Ethan looked at him closely.
“What were her conditions?” he asked.
Levi chuckled, but there was no joy in the sound. It was tired. Defeated. The laugh of a man who had already accepted a painful bargain because the alternative was worse.
“That I leave Amber and come back to her. I accepted. It is better that Amber is alive and we are apart than she dies while we are together. Either way, I won’t have her, but one option leaves room for hope,” he said.
Joseph felt the shame deepen until it sat like a stone in his chest. Levi had not left Amber because she was no longer important. He had left because she was too important. He had made a deal that would break him just to give her a chance to live. And Joseph had stood in the open and called him the source of their pain.
While they were coming out of the shock of their altercation with their stepfather, Ethan got a call from Dr Rosenberg.
Ethan answered the phone immediately, hoping their mother’s case had not worsened. His hand tightened on the phone. After everything, one more bad update would feel like the floor disappearing.
“Hello,” he said.
Dr Rosenberg sighed.
“I have been calling Beta Levi, and his phone is off,” Dr Rosenberg said.
Ethan looked at Levi.

Chapter 245
“What happened to your cell?” he asked.
“Battery is dead,” Levi responded.
Ethan nodded.
“He is here,” Ethan said.
Dr Rosenberg sighed with relief.
“There is an Agnes Thomas here. She said he sent her to the hospital. She is O negative and wants to donate part of her liver to your mother. I need him to come and sign a consent form for the operation,” Dr Rosenberg said.
Ethan realised then that their stepfather had been telling the truth all along.
“He will soon be there,” Ethan said.
The doctor hung up.
Ethan looked at Joseph and did not know how to tell his brother he was wrong about Levi when the truth had already done that for him. Suddenly, Ethan felt like an ingrate too. They both did. Eevi had spent years being the man in the middle of their anger, grief and suspicion, and now, when he had made a sacrifice no one had asked him to make, they had thrown all the darkness at his feet.
“Agnes is at the hospital, and the doctor wants you to sign the consent form,” Ethan said to Levi.
Hearing what Ethan said, Joseph felt like a jerk. A real one. The kind that could not hide behind anger or fear anymore. He placed his hands on his head and cursed at Cynthia and her Alpha because it was easier than cursing himself, though he knew he deserved it too. They had sown so much doubt and discord with their actions that Joseph could not wish them well. They had not only come to take Whitewood. They had come to turn family against family, to make every old suspicion look like truth, to make them tear each other apart before the real fight began.
