Chapter 243

Cynthia ignored their fiasco and started allocating jobs to the warriors she brought and to the house residents. She had delivered her message. However they planned to work it out between themselves was up to them, but the update took effect immediately. That was Cynthia. She could stand beside a family breaking open and still think first of power. Her eyes moved over the compound,

issuing instructions, deciding who would guard where, who would watch the gates, who would control movement, who would drag –

the kneeling workers inside.

Levi remained on his knees in tears.

“How can you even think those things?” he said, showing his emotions.

Joseph’s chest rose and fell hard, but he said nothing.

“I believe you have suspected me for a while now. That is why you would say all those things over Cynthia’s statement,” Levi said,

running his fingers through his hair.

His voice shook, but it was not weak. It carried pain and anger together.

“I love Amber. I have all my life. When she married Cain, I was happy for her. I was delighted for both of them. I did not kill my best

friend. How can I? Cain is like a brother to me, Joseph. We were inseparable. I did not start my pack because I wanted to support

him,” Levi said.

Joseph’s face remained hard, but something in his eyes flickered.

“I had the means and resources to leave, but I remained to serve my friend because I knew no one would have his back. I had someone I was dating when I married your mother, Joseph. I left the woman and told her to start her life elsewhere because I knew the wolves would come for this pack, and I wanted to protect the three of you,” Levi said.

His words came faster now, emotion breaking through the dignity he usually held around himself.

“I gave up on a life I would have had to preserve what Cain left behind. It wasn’t easy, but I did it. How can you think such of me? Had I wanted the pack, I would have killed both of you as children and finished your mother off. No one would be the wiser, but I didn’t. I trained you two and handed the pack to your brother when he was of age. How can you think such things of me? You think

I like being here?” he asked, enraged.

Joseph was still angry, but he became a bit calmer. Not convinced. Not apologetic. But the force of Levi’s pain had reached him

enough to slow his rage.

“I hate it. I remained because Amber refused to leave. She refused to let go of the past, so I remained. What would be my gain in all

this?” Levi asked him.

Joseph was silent.

“You can’t accuse me without proof. Tell me what my gain would be?” Levi asked.

Joseph still had no answer.

“To answer to an anonymous Alpha when I am an Alpha in my own right?” Levi asked, mad at Joseph’s accusation.

The question sat between them. Ugly. Fair. Difficult.

“You pinned everything on me with just one thought. If you felt that way, why didn’t you challenge me? Why didn’t you?” he asked

Joseph.

While he spoke, Ethan’s van arrived.

The compound went still in a different way.

Levi remained on his knees, not wanting to get up. Maybe because standing suddenly felt like too much. Maybe because he did not

want anyone to think he was accepting the role Cynthia had thrown at him. Maybe because Joseph’s words had wounded him too

deeply and he needed one moment on the ground to hold himself together.

The place was silent as Ethan wheeled his chair out of the van.

Ethan was surprised to see Levi on his knees, Joseph fuming with anger, and everyone who worked for them on their knees. His eyes

moved quickly, taking in the silver bracelets, the beaten state of Adam and Brian, the warriors, Cynthia, Levi, Joseph. His face

hardened with every detail. It took effort not to let Echo surge too obviously beneath his skin.

“What is going on here?” Ethan asked.

Cynthia began to laugh.

“So you finally graced us with your presence,” she said to Ethan.

He ignored her.

That made Cynthia’s smile twitch a little. Ethan did not even look at her properly. He looked at Joseph and asked his question again,

because Cynthia’s voice meant nothing to him.

“What is going on here?” Ethan repeated.

“Cynthia’s Alpha sent her to take over as Luna and place Levi as Alpha of the pack. The two of them will answer to him until he is

ready to take over the pack physically,” Joseph explained.

Ethan almost lost his cool. His gaze snapped to Levi, and a growl rolled out of him before he could stop it completely.

“Bloody snake. That was what you went to do when you left your wife in the hospital. You went to secure yourself?” he said,

growling at his stepfather.

Levi did not respond. He was still hurting and shocked at what Joseph thought of him. Ethan’s accusation landed on top of the first

one, and Levi looked like a man being buried alive by the sons he had helped raise.

“Do not be angry with the Alpha, darling. Everyone has to secure themselves so they don’t fall through the cracks,” Cynthia sard

calmly to Ethan.

Ethan cringed at her term of endearment. The word darling from her mouth felt like rot touching his skin. Once, maybe, such a tone

from her might have hurt him differently. Now it only disgusted him.

“It will be best you refer to me by my name, Cynthia,” he warned her.

She smiled.

“I am sure you will see things differently. The last order given to me was to inform you that you were all to remain in the mansion

under my supervision, or the pack members would be wiped out. I am sure by now you know we have the might,” she said with a

smile.

Then she looked at Levi, who still knelt on the ground.

“When you are done, see me in the Luna’s office. Failure to comply will cost you more than your reputation, Beta,” she said.

She walked away, ensuring everyone kneeling outside was dragged in. She planned on locking all of them up, and only when they

chose to obey would she release them.
