Underwater: The Silent Luna novel Chapter 232

Chapter 232

He chuckled on the phone.

“I see I chose the wrong person,” he said.

Panic shot through her. Now that Sebastien had left her, the Alpha was all she had. She could not lose this chance before it began.

She shook her head immediately even though he could not see her.

“No, Alpha, you didn’t,” she said quickly.

“I guess Sebastien didn’t tell you some things, so I will excuse your ignorance,” he said, clearing his throat.

Cynthia went still. Her earlier fear returned, but this time it was different. Colder. Sebastien’s anger was fire. The Alpha’s displeasure was something quieter and worse.

“You are not at liberty to say no to me. When I ask you to jump, you say how high. Am I clear?” he asked her.

She answered immediately.

“Yes, Alpha,” she said.

He hung up after that.

Cynthia slowly lowered the phone. He did not sound affectionate or pleasant. He sounded like he had been ordering her as if she was one of his errand boys. The promise of making her Luna suddenly felt less soft in her hands. Less like a gift and more like bait. She began to fear she had finally made the wrong move. Maybe she should have stuck with Sebastien. Maybe his warning had not been jealousy. Maybe he had been telling the truth.

But that ship had now sailed.

What if all the Alpha had told her were lies and he had only used her to get some things done? What if he had no real intention of mating her unless it suited some plan she did not understand? She also did not miss that Sebastien said he had a good reason to do what he was doing, and that he did not like it but had to. The words began to sound different now. Less like excuses. More like

clues.

She slowly realised she had gotten into the mix of something deep and messy.

Still, she dressed up and got ready for the day. There was no going back. She could not call Sebastien now. She could not apologise. She could not run to Joseph or Ethan. She had burned too many bridges and climbed too far up the wrong ladder to turn around without falling. She sat on her bed in the hotel room, waiting for the warriors to come and get her so she could go to Whitewood and start her mission there.

Meadow woke up in the morning and found Ethan dressed up already.

She frowned at him immediately. There was something unfair about waking to find him fully dressed and looking like he had been planning things without her. He sat there, calm, ready, handsome in that serious way that always made her heart shift even when she wanted to be annoyed. He smiled at her, and the smile softened his face enough that her irritation almost weakened.

Almost.

“Were you going to sneak off without me?” she linked him.

Ethan shook his head.

“Not really. I just did not want to trouble your sleep. You looked so peaceful I did not want to disturb you,” he said.

Meadow frowned at him because that was too sweet to be angry at properly, and she did not appreciate it. He had a way of saying things so plainly that they landed deeper than a grand speech would have. She had slept peacefully because she was tired, yes, but also because he had been there. Because for a few hours, despite poison, enemies, and fear, his presence had made the room safe.

“How is your back?” she asked.

Ethan nodded.

“The pain is there but less than yesterday, so I can manage. I think it has healed on the surface,” he said.
