Chapter 226
Dr Rosenberg took Amber’s file to his office to peruse. He was not going to take any chances with the McClouds again. That thought had been repeating in his head since Dr James’s letter changed everything. He had served them for decades. He had believed he knew every danger that could enter a body under his care. But Ethan had been destroyed under the cover of medicine, and Dr Rosenberg’s name had been used to hide it. He would not allow the same kind of blindness to touch Amber.
Something about Ashley’s symptoms, though mild, had made him decide to run a thorough check on Amber. At first, it had only been a suspicion. A small irritation in the back of his mind. Ashley’s wound had been serious because of the bleeding, yes, but something about the poison on the blade had stayed with him. The poison that got into Ashley was not meant to kill her. It was meant to slow her down. The stab wound itself had been careful. Whoever wielded the knife had only stabbed her to incapacitat
her.
No organ had been wounded. That mattered. The blade had not gone in wildly. It had not aimed to end her. The poison stopped her from healing, making her bleed slowly, buying the attackers the advantage they needed. But the fact that the poison slowed down Ashley’s liver function made him suspicious. Although Ashley would have been able to expel the poison on her own eventually, he had to make her recover faster because of the blood loss and weakness.
What if the same had happened to Amber?
Dr Rosenberg hoped what he was thinking would not be the case. He truly hoped it was only fear making him see shadows. But after what happened with Ethan and the attack on the pack, he knew it was his duty to ensure the McClouds would not be medically incapacitated again. They had already been weakened once through medicine. He would not sit in his office and call Amber’s sickness bad luck if something more sinister had been hiding in her blood all along.
He went through the blood work carefully.
Then he found traces of two liver-damaging substances. Vinyl chloride and polychlorinated biphenyls.
The doctor went still.
It was not the same as what was found in Ashley, and it was not on Amber’s wound. That meant the substances had not entered through the recent fight. They were not from the blade. Not from that day’s attack. Dr Rosenberg stared at the results, then checked again because a part of him wanted to be wrong. He wondered how they got into her system.
He then checked the blood work performed twelve hours later and found nothing.
That should have confused him more, and it did for a moment. But once the confusion passed, the pattern became terrifyingly clear. As confusing as it might seem to someone else, Dr Rosenberg knew exactly what to think now that he knew people were after the McClouds to ruin them. Someone or some people were feeding Amber those chemicals. Small doses. Carefully. Not enough to kill her immediately. Enough to damage her slowly while everyone thought her body had simply betrayed her.
That was why she got better when she came to the hospital and fell sick again when she went home.
Whatever was happening to Amber was happening to her from home.

Chapter 226
Dr Rosenberg felt anger rise so fast that he had to place the file down before he crumpled the papers in his grip. The allegation was serious. Too serious to throw around carelessly. But he knew he had to tell Ethan what he suspected because if someone was trying to kill Amber with poison, nothing would stop them from attempting the lives of the rest of the family. Ethan, Joseph, Meadow, Levi, anyone who ate or drank inside that house could be next. Or maybe some of them were already being watched.
He could not tell how it was getting into Luna Amber’s system. Food. Water. Tea. Medicine. Something she consumed regularly. Something inside the mansion. Someone had found a way to administer small doses over the years undetected.
Amber had been visiting with mild symptoms of nausea, fever, headaches, and fatigue at first. Then, gradually, the symptoms became worse. Loss of appetite. Nausea and vomiting. Upper abdominal pain. And now she was in a coma, which was part of the adverse effects. Her liver cells were so damaged that they had stopped regenerating. It was a severe battle for Amber and her wolf. It was also rare for wolves to have liver failure, but it was possible, so Amber had been regarded as one of the unlucky few.
Now Dr Rosenberg was no longer sure luck had anything to do with it.
He was mad. Very mad. He tried to calm himself before picking up his phone to call Ethan. He needed to sound like a doctor, not a man enraged by the idea that someone had been quietly poisoning a woman he had cared for over many years.
Ethan relaxed in bed after what Meadow had done to him. His breathing was easier, his body looser, his mind quieter for the first time all day. He had wanted her to come on top of him, but she refused because it would cause movement and friction that might affect his healing. Meadow had wanted him too. He could feel that. She did not hide it well, not from him and not from the bond
between them. But she would not risk his recovery for desire, no matter how much her body answered his.
As much as Meadow wanted to ride him, she did not want to do anything that would impede or interfere with his healing. He
needed to heal quickly because they were on a clock. Every hour mattered. Every small improvement mattered. Pleasure could wait
where healing could not.
She lay down and placed her head on his chest. Ethan rubbed her back gently, caressing her skin with slow, careful strokes. Her
scent filled his senses, and though it pleased him deeply, it upset Echo because they had not fully claimed each other yet. His wolf
stirred beneath the surface, restless and frustrated, wanting what Ethan’s body was not ready to complete.
Ethan tried to calm him down and relax.
Meadow caressed his chest to help him because she, too, could feel Echo’s distress. That still amazed Ethan. The way she could
sense things in him now. The way the bond had begun speaking between them even without words. She touched him not only like a
wife soothing a husband, but like a mate calming the wolf beneath his skin. Her hand moved over his chest, slow and gentle, and
Echo settled just enough to stop pushing against Ethan’s ribs.
Ethan’s phone finally rang, and he did not need to guess who it was.
Meadow turned and reached for it, then handed it to him. He thanked her before answering the call.
“Doctor,” Ethan said, feeling lighter than he had a few moments ago.
“Alpha, are you in a place where we can discuss freely?” Dr Rosenberg said.

Chapter 226
The doctor tried to sound calm, but Ethan sensed everything was not alright. He almost sat up, but the pain reminded him of Kis back, and he relaxed. Meadow felt the sudden tension in him and lifted her head slightly, her eyes searching his face.
“I am listening,” Ethan said to the phone.
