Chapter 216
Cynthia paced about the hotel room where Sebastien had taken her, unable to sit still long enough for her thoughts to arrange
themselves. It was the following day after the attack, but the victory did not feel like victory in her chest. It felt like standing on a
thin sheet of ice and hearing the first crack beneath her feet. The room was neat, quiet, and expensive enough to pretend
everything was under control, but Cynthia knew better. She had lived too long with danger to mistake silence for peace.
Sebastien had asked her to wait while he went to meet up with the Alpha. That alone made her uneasy. She did not like being left
behind when decisions were being made. She did not like waiting for men to return with instructions that affected her life. She did
not like not knowing what was being said about her, especially when she had taken risks of her own. But she had no choice. Not yet.
She was still tied to Sebastien, still trapped in the space between needing him and hating him, still dependent on a man who could
turn cruel whenever her ambition reminded him of old wounds.
She walked from the bed to the window, then from the window back to the small table. Her fingers touched the edge of the dresser,
then withdrew. She could not settle. Her mind kept going back to Whitewood. Back to the McCloud mansion. Back to Joseph’s face.
Back to Amber, Levi, Ashley, and the way everything had fallen too quickly. That was what worried her most. Their victory had been
too easy. Too neat. Too fast. The McClouds were proud wolves. They were not the type to stay down simply because someone
pushed them once. She doubted they were finished. She doubted they had even fully understood what had happened before
Sebastien started acting like the pack was already his to divide and command.
She had told Sebastien that they should take over the pack immediately and control what was happening inside. They should have
entered Whitewood properly, sat in the house, watched the staff, secured the warriors, and made sure the McClouds had no room to
breathe. But Sebastien had told her it was beyond him and that they could only do as the Alpha had instructed.
That answer had unsettled her.
Cynthia did not like the way the operation had gone. She did not like taking risks without understanding the full game. She liked
power, yes. She liked moving pieces, yes. She liked the thrill of being close to something bigger than herself, but she did not like
being blind. The Alpha had expressly instructed them not to kill the McClouds but only incapacitate them. That did not sound like a
simple takeover. A man who wanted a pack would remove the people who could later reclaim it. He would wipe the line if he had
the stomach for it. He would make sure there were no loose ends breathing in hospital rooms and mansion wings.
So why keep them alive?
Why did he want them breathing? Why leave Ethan alive years ago too? Why damage instead of destroy? Why take Whitewood on
the surface but not step forward himself? What did he want with the McClouds? It sounded more like a personal vendetta than a
pack conquest, and personal vendettas were dangerous because they rarely followed clean logic.
Cynthia needed to be wise.
She finally sat down on the edge of the bed, though her body remained tense. Her knees were pressed together, her hands clasped,
her eyes fixed on the door as if Sebastien might burst through it at any moment with a mood she would have to survive. She was
worried about too many things at once. Whitewood. The Alpha. Sebastien. Joseph. The McClouds. The chance that their easy victory
was only the first move in a game she did not yet understand.
