Chapter 217
Then there was the other thing. The more personal thing. The thing that made her stomach tighten every time she thought abou! Sebastien meeting the Alpha.
After Sebastien had threatened her while she was still spying on the McClouds and feeding him information, she had found a way to get the Alpha’s contact details and reach out to him herself. At the time, it had felt clever. Necessary even. Sebastien was becoming too unstable, too possessive, too cruel with his anger. She needed options. She had not survived this long by depending entirely on one man’s favour. She had always known how to look for the next door before the one behind her closed.
The Alpha had not sounded friendly when she contacted him. He had not sounded receptive either. His voice had been controlled. cold in a way that did not need to shout to make people afraid. But she noticed something else too. He sounded familiar. She could/ not place it, and that bothered her. A voice like that did not leave room for comfort. It crawled somewhere beneath memory and stayed there.
Her aim had been to meet him and seduce him, because Cynthia knew her strengths. She knew what men wanted, and she knew how to make ambition look like devotion when needed. But the man had caught on quickly. He did not leave room for that kind of game. He had heard what she was trying to do and stepped around it like he had expected it before she even moved.
Now she was worried the Alpha would tell Sebastien what she had done. If he did, Sebastien would beat her as usual.
Her mouth went dry at the thought.
She hated that fear. She hated that her body reacted before her pride could stop it. She hated that she could stand before enemies with a sharp tongue and still become small when Sebastien’s rage turned towards her. She hated that she knew the pattern too well. The insult. The slap. The hand around her throat. The accusation that she had embarrassed him again. The cruel way he reminded
her that she owed him.
She had stayed with Sebastien for seven years. Seven years of loving him, supporting him, standing beside him through frustration and humiliation, through failure and ambition, through all the times he promised the future would be different once he had what he deserved. She had given him loyalty, or at least the closest thing to loyalty she knew how to give. She had helped him, endured him, fought beside him, slept beside him, planned with him.
And still, he never found the need to commit to her.
Part of it was her fault. She knew that. She had tried to get with his brother. That old mistake had not only wounded Sebastion. It had poisoned the entire shape of their relationship. Sebastien never forgave her for that. He told her they would settle down once he owned a pack, but his brother had beaten him at the challenge, and after that, everything became about finding another way up.
Another pack. Another opportunity. Another door into power.
She wondered what she was still doing with him.
That question came often now, more often than she wanted to admit. What was she doing with a man who no longer kissed her like he loved her? What was she doing with a man who could hurt her and then speak about loyalty as if his own cruelty was not betrayal too? What was she doing waiting for him to become powerful enough to finally give her what she wanted, when he had

She needed an upgrade.
