I twisted in the bed, my feet getting tangled in the sheets. I could feel the warmth on my eyes coming from somewhere near the window that told me night was already over.

But I didn’t want to wake up because my head felt like it was on fire. A dull, aching throb echoed through my brain like someone was pounding on its walls with a hammer.

I groaned in my sleep, my hand flying to find more pillows to bury myself in. I felt for the pillows around and my hands found them lined perfectly along my side.

Okay, why were they placed like that? I slowly forced my eyes open and looked to the side to see that indeed there was a wall of pillows going through the middle of the bed.

Startled, I got up, looking at the expanse of the bed and noting the empty other side of it.

Connor wasn’t around.

He must have woken up earlier, I thought, given that he had fallen asleep even before I did.

Confusion slowly turned into relief after realizing that the pillows were all just the way I had placed them last night.

They were all intact and exactly the way I had put them like a wall between us.

That could only mean one thing.

The medicines were working!

A disbelieving laugh slipped out of me. My wolf could be controlled and my scent wouldn’t cause any further issues to Connor. He wouldn’t have to be distracted because of my scent anymore and he could fully focus on the succession right now with a clear head.

Yes! My heart rejoiced and I couldn’t be more happy than I was right now.

I wanted to share this good news with him now that I would not hesitate to be around him. I wanted to look him in the eye without the constant, humiliating awareness that my own body was broadcasting things I couldn’t control.

So, I got out of the bed happily, showered and had just stepped outside when there was a knock on the door.

“Good morning” Maria stepped in, holding a tray of breakfast and coffee for me.

“Good morning to you too” I smiled at her while dragging a comb through my damp hair.

“You appear to be in a good mood tonight” she observed.

I nodded. “I have a feeling it’s going to be a good day today”, quickly gulping down the bitter tonic and

She placed the tray on the small table beside the bed and asked, noticing the small bottle of tonic. “Are you

ill?”

I shrugged. “Just some multivitamin stuff”

She didn’t press further for which I was glad.

“Hope your wishes come true”

Maria’s gaze fell on the row of pillows on the bed but said nothing and simply began making the bed.

“Where is Connor by the way?” I asked, pulling a soft yellow knee-length dress from the wardrobe.

“He has been sweating in the gym for hours”

“Hours?” I threw her a surprised look. Connor had a perfect physique which no doubt he earned through hard work but today he should be focussing on preparing for the QnA session rather than destroying himself in the gym.

Maria nodded, smoothing the bedsheet. “Yeah, he muttered something about not getting enough sleep but didn’t elaborate. He also refused breakfast. I went to him twice.”

Now why would he do that?

“What did he say exactly?” I asked her.

“Just told me to leave him alone. His mood wasn’t that great either”

I frowned. I had to meet him and ensure he had calmed down a little. Facing Elder Johanson in such a foul mood would affect his standing adversely given that the old man already hated him.

And that also reminded me about the little chat the old man had with Sandra last night.

I got ready and grabbed the tray from the table.

“Do you not like the sandwiches? Should I get you something else?”

“No, I am going to have breakfast with Connor. You can get us hot coffee in some time if you like”

Maria shook her head, trying to stop me.

“No, he already told me he wanted to be left alone for the day.”

I shrugged, already stepping out of the room with the tray in my hands. “Let him throw me out as well then”

The gym took up an entire glass-walled wing on the far side of the mansion. Even from the corridor I could hear the heavy, rhythmic impact of fists against leather. I pushed the door open and stopped.

The space was massive and filled with the latest machines, a deep sand pit, a towering climbing wall covered

in thick ropes, and several other high-intensity training workouts for a werewolf to challenge himself.

Morning light flooded through the glass, turning the dust motes gold as I looked around the expansive space twice before I found him.

Connor was at the far end, driving punch after punch into a heavy bag so violently that it made the chains rattle.

Connor was wearing only dark training shorts and his shirt lay on the floor in a crumpled heap.
