That caught my attention despite myself. “Help him how?”

Aaron’s voice dropped and he looked around to ensure nobody was nearby.

“They asked me a series of questions today. Border strategy, how I would handle a challenge to the pack’s southern routes, what I would prioritise if two allied packs went to war over trade. I wasn’t fully prepared for the angle they took and I stumbled on a couple of points. If you tell Connor what they asked, he can walk in ready and not fumble like I did.”

My eyes widened in surprise. I had missed all of the questions but this could really prove useful for Connor, especially with Elder Johanson hating Connor so much already.

“You want to willingly help Connor when you can outshine him?”

“Consider it my way of trying to fix things between us.” He offered a small, familiar smile. “I miss my best friend and I know Connor is important to you even if I don’t understand why.”

“He is nice and friendly” I shrugged and Aaron blinked.

“Is that all he needs to be in your good books? Just play nice and friendly?”

This was the exact same dialogue I had with Connor back in the cottage.

When I didn’t answer, Aaron added. “You don’t spend time with me, you don’t even call or text me anymore. 1 fear my friend is slipping away from me in front of my eyes and I absolutely hate that, Sia.”

The words made me look him in the eye again.

A month ago they would have been everything I wanted to hear. Now they sat strangely in my chest. I had spent years wanting Aaron to look at me like this, to choose me over everyone else, to miss me.

Yet standing here, with his hand still lightly on my arm, all I felt was the urge to step back. My mind kept drifting to another voice, another set of eyes, another man who had taken me to a quiet cottage by a lake and given me a children’s book like it was something precious.

He noticed the shift in my expression. “What’s wrong?”

I hesitated, the question rising before I could stop it. “Have you noticed anything… weird about me lately?”

He frowned slightly. “Weird how?”

“Do I… smell different to you? Off, somehow?”

Aaron looked genuinely confused. He studied my face for a moment, then shook his head. “You smell fine. Nothing about you is weird or off, Sienna. You’re exactly the way you’re supposed to be.”

The reassurance should have comforted me. Instead my face fell.

My wolf wasn’t reacting to him at all, not even a little despite me spending my entire life crushing over hi

The invitation scent, the pull, the ridiculous hormonal chaos that had sent me to a specialist this morning none of it was aimed at the boy I had wanted for years.

It was aimed at Connor, the bully who had made me cry everyday in childhood and now made my heart flutter just with a smile.

The realization made me feel like somebody had dumped a bucket of ice cold water over me.

I took a small step back, forcing a smile that felt thin. “I should go. Thank you for the information. I’ll… pas

on.”

“But I didn’t even tell you everything in detail…” Aaron began.

“The basics should be enough for Connor” I said hurriedly, stepping away from the corner he had pulled m into.

Aaron looked like he wanted to say more, but I was already turning away. My hands felt slightly clammy.

I had come here to find Connor, to explain the tonic and the ridiculous test Jane had suggested, and instead had walked straight into a reminder that the boy I used to want no longer moved the needle at all.

Maybe I had to fix my wolf first so that our wishes aligned perfectly.

And for that, I had to find Connor but where was he?

I called him twice before he picked up, and when he finally did his voice sounded a bit distracted.

“Where are you?” I asked.

“Terrace,” he answered. “Come up if you want.”

The terrace at night was cold enough that I regretted not grabbing a jacket on my way out, and I hugged my arms around myself.

I climbed the last set of stairs and pushed through the door, to see him standing at the far railing with his back to me. His hands were in his pockets, and he was looking up at the moon like he could just reach it if he tried hard enough.

I stopped just past the doorway and let myself look for a second, because he wasn’t watching me wondering what about him made my wolf want him so much.

Connor wasn’t in a suit but jeans and a black sweater with the sleeves pushed up past his forearms.

The wind ruffled through his hair and I saw his shoulders sag a little.

I stood there longer than I should have and he exhaled slowly, and I watched the breath rise up in a small white cloud against the dark.

“Are you forgetting that I have werewolf hearing?” he asked, without turning around.

Heat crawled up my neck. I hadn’t made a sound but I crossed the terrace and came to stand beside him at the railing, both of us looking at the sky now instead of at each other, which felt oddly at peace.

“It’s beautiful tonight,” I said.
