Winona was discharged after three days of observation.
Stefan looked at her. "Does our plan to get married today still stand?"
She smiled softly. "Of course. I even bought a dress for it."
They headed home to change.
Winona put on an elegant white dress and applied a light, natural makeup look.
Stefan changed into a sharply tailored suit, adjusting his tie with meticulous care.
Standing next to him, Winona looked in the mirror.
"Mr. Goddard, we look amazing together."
He chuckled. "Isn't that for other people to say?"
She looped her arm through his, her eyes curving into bright crescents. "I don't need anyone else to tell me. I know we're a perfect match."
He adored the way she said that. He suddenly felt an overwhelming urge to kiss her, but not wanting to ruin her makeup, he pressed his lips to her hair instead.
"Ms. Jowett, I am very much looking forward to becoming your legal husband."
They drove straight to the marriage registry.
Once the license was signed and finalized, they posed for a commemorative photo.
Just as she had said, they looked stunning together.
"I can't believe we actually did it," Winona said with a laugh. "If your mother finds out, will she lose her mind?"
Stefan slipped the marriage license into the inner pocket of his suit jacket. He took her hand, his eyes filled with absolute contentment.
"It's my life, not hers. Besides, she didn't exactly listen to my grandmother when she got married. On some level, she should understand. No matter how rational a person is, love makes you do impulsive things."
Winona raised an eyebrow. "I thought you thought this through completely before asking me."
He couldn't help but kiss her lips, his voice dropping to a tender murmur. "When I'm with you, rationality goes completely out the window."
He was just a normal man. Around the woman he loved, his emotions ran wild.
But he controlled it well. He was no longer an impulsive teenager. No matter how intense the storm of feelings inside him got, he always maintained his gentlemanly composure and respected her boundaries.
Smothering, unfiltered intensity could be overwhelming. He wanted her to feel entirely comfortable and safe in this relationship.
She didn't need validation from a room full of strangers, nor did she need a massive spectacle to satisfy anyone's vanity.
"The dress can be simple too. No need for custom haute couture. I'll pick something off the rack that I like."
She had worn overly complicated gowns before. Feeling trapped in a beautiful torture device was miserable. She wanted to feel relaxed and deeply happy on her wedding day.
Stefan smiled warmly. "Whatever you want."
He knew that beneath her gentle exterior, she was incredibly decisive. The wedding was for her, so her word was law.
Back at the estate, Stefan handed the marriage license to Violet.
The older woman frantically grabbed her reading glasses, squinting closely at the photo and names on the document. "You really got married? You're not messing with me?"
"Why would I joke about this?" Stefan replied calmly.
Violet was ecstatic. Her grandson had finally done something right. With the absolute circus surrounding Margaret, Maeve and Ophelia, she had been terrified he would just swear off marriage entirely.
She took Winona's hand and pressed a sleek black bank card into her palm. Her eyes were full of maternal warmth.
"I haven't prepared a proper wedding gift yet. Take this for now. Buy whatever makes you happy. There's a nine-figure sum in there, and if it's not enough, just let me know."
