Winona didn't want to waste another second on her. She just wanted to go home and check on Nikita, but Tallulah suddenly seized her wrist. Ezra immediately stepped forward, reaching out to pry Tallulah's fingers away. Before he could even make contact, Tallulah let out a piercing scream.
She tumbled backward, rolling down the concrete steps. It was only a dozen or so stairs, not a particularly steep drop, but given her pregnancy, the impact was devastating. By the time she hit the bottom, a horrifying bloom of dark crimson was already soaking through the fabric of her dress.
Winona froze, genuinely stunned. Before she could fully process what had just happened, Giselle's sharp voice rang out from behind her. "Winona, why on earth would you push her?"
Winona turned. Yulen was already sprinting toward Tallulah, his face pale and contorted with panic. He scooped her up in his arms without a word and practically ran toward his car.
Winona frowned, her mind racing. Tallulah had absolutely lost her mind. Even if she desperately wanted to frame Winona, sacrificing her own unborn child to do it was borderline psychopathic.
Ezra glanced at Winona. "Should we go to the hospital and see what's happening?"
"I didn't even touch her," Winona said flatly. "She threw herself down those stairs. Since it has nothing to do with me, I have no reason to be there. Just take me to see my grandmother."
"Understood."
Seeing that Winona was actually about to leave, Giselle stepped into her path. "You push Tallulah down a flight of stairs and think you can just walk away?"
Winona's expression was glacial. "If I were actually responsible, the police would be the ones taking me away right now. I'm not entertaining your baseless accusations."
Giselle was taken aback. She had fully expected Winona to be trembling in fear, not standing there with icy composure.
"But Tallulah fell because of you—"
"She didn't fall because of me. She threw herself backward," Winona cut her off, her tone razor-sharp. "No one here saw me push her. I'd watch your mouth if I were you, Giselle."
Without another word, she turned and walked to the car. Giselle watched her go, a slow, malicious smile curving her lips. Winona was far too confident. As long as Tallulah swore up and down that Winona had pushed her, there was no way she was walking away from this clean.
Later that evening, Winona arrived at Nikita's house and immediately noticed the older woman's swollen, red palm. She quickly asked what had happened.
Helena sighed, stepping out of the kitchen. "Her caregiver had to take the day off. Your grandmother decided to cook by herself and ended up getting a nasty prick from a fishbone while prepping dinner. When I got home and saw her hand swelling up, I tried to take her to the doctor, but she refused. Thank God I forced the issue. The doctor said if we'd waited any longer, the infection would have spread. It could have been a disaster."
