Darin set his phone aside and quickly looked up the next available flight from Cloudville back to the Capital. By noon, he still had not received a call back, so he tried dialing the number again. This time, the call connected. "Are you back in the Capital?" Darin asked directly.
Max offered a curt hum of confirmation.
"Want to grab lunch together?"
"Let's talk tonight," Max replied gruffly.
Darin did not push the issue. "Alright."
An hour later, a sleek Rolls-Royce pulled smoothly into the sprawling grounds of Hawthorne Manor. A bodyguard hurried forward to open the door, and Max stepped out. As he strode purposefully into the grand living room, his entire being radiated an incredibly dark, oppressive energy. The butler hurried over to greet him but felt a sudden jolt of alarm. In his eyes, Max had always been the epitome of cold, unshakeable aristocratic grace. He had never seen the man look so completely unhinged. "Mr. Hawthorne, you're back. Everyone is waiting for you in the dining room," the butler reported nervously.
Max headed toward the dining room with heavy, measured steps. The entire Hawthorne family was gathered today, nearly filling the massive table that could comfortably seat fifteen people. The moment Max crossed the threshold, the low murmur of conversation instantly died out. Every single pair of eyes locked onto him. Randy and Paul opened their mouths, ready to enthusiastically call out to their Uncle Max, but one look at his terrifyingly dark expression sent a wave of fear through them, rendering the young boys completely speechless.
Miranda sat regally at the head of the table. She looked steadily at her grandson. "You are finally back."
Tatiana, on the other hand, was deeply startled by her son's haggard appearance. She immediately stood up and rushed over to smooth out the rumpled collar of his shirt. "Have you not been resting well lately? Why didn't you freshen up a bit?"
Max completely ignored his mother's fussing, walking straight past her toward his usual seat. A maid hastily pulled out his chair for him. Once he was seated, another servant quickly handed him a warm towel to wipe his hands. Max took the towel and methodically wiped his skin. Watching her son's rigid posture, Tatiana felt a surge of maternal worry twisted with an indescribable, gnawing anxiety. She stepped forward and cautiously took the seat right beside him.
Even though the table was packed with relatives for a family gathering ostensibly meant to celebrate Max surviving his grueling ordeal, the atmosphere held absolutely no warmth or joy. Instead, the room was suffocated by a pin-drop silence. Miranda looked closely at Max and let out a very faint sigh. Turning to the rest of the family, she announced, "Dig in."
"Max, your grandfather has been terribly worried about you," Miranda instructed. "Go freshen up and head over to Greenwood Sanitarium to see him. Put his mind at ease." Due to his deteriorating health, Brysen could no longer stay at the manor and was currently living full-time at the sanitarium under round-the-clock professional medical supervision.
"Yes, hurry up and go," Tatiana urged nervously.
Max shot his mother a single, deeply unreadable look, but said absolutely nothing.
By the time he came back downstairs dressed in fresh clothes, the rest of the extended family had dispersed. Only Miranda, Brandon, and Tatiana remained in the cavernous living room. Max walked down the steps and threw himself onto a sofa, sinking back against the cushions in total silence, his eyes dark and brooding.
Tatiana looked at her son, completely at a loss for words. It was Brandon who finally broke the heavy quiet, his expression grave. "Max, if you have something you want to say, then just say it."

Take her back? Want to see her?? Donno about Felicia but I think I’m falling for this Max somehow🫠🙈pls update daily...
I knew it! Hopefully Felicia's health will improve and will want to have the baby. Oh how I despise Max's family....
Please post *I forgot I ever loved you*...
Is this coming to an end...
Oh nooo!! Don’t tell me Max will get washed ashore on a remote island then loses all his memory, then falls inlove with the local girl who saves him. Then when he meets Felicia again he won’t recognize her and breaks her heart again. Additional plot twist is that Felicia is pregnant with their 2nd child. Please pleaseee don’t give us this scenario.. LOL!!!...
If Max can be forgiven Darrin can be forgiven. And I do not like this marriage business but if it has to happen I hope after he gets stranded on some remote island alone while Felicia and his family fight over custody she wins and also gets half his estate. Then by time he comes back she's found having and remarried. Lol...
The writer is good. They're making me interested in Max. I won't say like yet....
It seems the only one who hasn't suffered is Max. Even his family fakes anger and disappointment all their own doing so they suffer a little. Everyone else has suffered. Luke and Jeremy unrequited. Felicia has suffered the most from family to unrequited to romance to long suffering Mother. Even baby Anne never had a mother til Felicia suffered then came back only to suffer some more. lol...
Oh no what did Colton do?... I have a bone to pick. When Olisha had to go the hospital why beg for Felicia? When she so loved Max? Seemed like she was in on the setup for Felicia to see a suicide for the 2nd time orchestrated by holden and his brother again. I might drop this series it's becoming endless with no real satisfaction for me. I don't need it to end because it's like a soap opera but if things don't end up making sense, tying up loose storylines it's gonna get old fast for me. Good luck author....
Anne, I think your baby brother is on the way. Thank goodness it doesn't say that Felicia is crying just like the last time but still, there's no willingness on her part. Max! You need to try harder. Make her fall in love with you again....
