It had only been a month since she last saw him, yet the physical toll on him was glaringly obvious. Max had lost a significant amount of weight, making his already striking jawline look incredibly sharp and ruthless. Dark stubble shadowed his chin, his eyes were heavily sunken, and deep, bruised circles hung beneath them. Max was usually a man who obsessed over presenting a flawless, commanding image to the world. She had never seen him look so dangerously unkempt.

After serving him, she scooped a small portion of rice for herself, sat down across from him, picked up her chopsticks, and began eating in absolute silence.

Max simply leaned back against his chair, his long legs casually splayed out, staring relentlessly at the woman quietly chewing food across from him. Feeling the weight of his gaze, Felicia finally looked up. He was staring at her as if she had committed an unforgivable sin. She let out a quiet sigh. "Have you already eaten?"

Max scoffed, his voice dripping with venom. "It's not like you prepared this for me anyway."

Clinging to her rapidly fraying patience, Felicia replied smoothly, "Then what would you like to eat? I can have Mabel cook something else for you."

"I want to eat you."

The words sent a violent, freezing shiver straight down her spine. The way he said it carried absolutely no romantic or sexual undertones. He looked at her as though he literally wanted to devour her alive, flesh and bone. She gripped her chopsticks tightly. "Cannibalism is a crime."

Max merely let out a dark, mocking sneer.

Determined to ignore him, Felicia dropped her gaze back to her food and continued eating. The man sitting across from her made absolutely no move to touch his silverware. He just sat there, boring holes into her, watching her like a predator studying a trapped piece of prey. A deep, inexplicable sense of panic began clawing at her chest.

"I'll go make some noodles for you," she suddenly announced.

Max said nothing.

Felicia practically bolted from the table and hurried into the kitchen. Just being out of his immediate line of sight allowed her to finally breathe. She put a pot of water on the stove and pulled a package of fresh pasta from the refrigerator. She stood rigidly by the counter, staring at the boiling water. Every single second of silence in the apartment felt agonizingly suffocating.

When the water finally began to furiously bubble, she snapped out of her daze, tossed the pasta in, and slowly stirred it. Once it was perfectly cooked, she scooped it into a large bowl. Mabel had made tomato beef stew for dinner, so Felicia put a generous spoonful of the rich sauce over the pasta. Pulling on a pair of oven mitts, she carefully carried the steaming bowl back to the dining table and placed it right in front of him.

"Well? Aren't you going to open it?" he asked dangerously. "Why are you just sitting there?"

Felicia took a deep, shuddering breath. Before she could even attempt to stand up, a horrifyingly loud screech echoed through the room as Max abruptly shoved his chair back against the hardwood floor. He stood up and stormed directly toward the entryway.

The moment he ripped the door open, the tension in the air thickened to the point of absolute suffocation.

Max stared menacingly at the man standing in the hall. "Your timing is impeccable. The dinner my wife prepared for you hasn't even gotten cold yet," he sneered, his voice overflowing with violent mockery. He turned his head slightly, glaring back at Felicia with terrifying rage. "The man you were waiting for is finally here."

He was acting exactly like a deranged, jealous husband who had just caught his wife cheating.

Completely ignoring Max's hostile theatrics, Jeremy calmly stepped inside. He walked straight past Max, approached the dining table, pulled out the chair directly beside Felicia, and sat down. Without sparing Max a single glance, he turned all his attention to Felicia. "Did you have a good meal?"
