The oppressive quiet hung between them like a tightly coiled wire ready to snap. Just as Felicia was about to lower her phone and end the call, Max's low, freezing voice cut through the silence.
"Don't you have anything to say to me?"
It had been over a month since she last heard his voice. The warmth and tenderness he used to show her now felt like nothing more than a fleeting illusion.
After a long, agonizing pause, Felicia took a deep breath. "I am just glad you are okay."
Hearing her perfectly flat, emotionless tone, Max let out a sudden, dark laugh. His amusement dripped with razor-sharp mockery. "It sounds like you are actually quite disappointed."
Felicia's knuckles turned stark white as she gripped the phone. She bit down hard on her lower lip, fighting desperately to keep any sound of distress from escaping.
When a long minute passed without her responding, Max's expression darkened even further. "Nothing else to say?"
Fighting the chaotic storm of emotions raging in her chest, Felicia forced her voice to remain steady. "There is nothing left to say."
With that, she abruptly ended the call. Her arm dropped limply to her side. It felt as though those few seconds had completely drained her of every ounce of strength. She collapsed against the back of the sofa, staring blankly out the window at the pitch-black night sky.
Miles away, Max slowly lowered his phone, his face a terrifying mask of cold fury.
Back in Cloudville, the housekeeper Mabel walked into the living room to let Felicia know dinner was ready. Noticing her employer's pale complexion, Mabel asked with genuine concern, "Are you feeling unwell, Ms. Ross? Should we go to the hospital?"
Snapping out of her daze, Felicia quickly composed herself. "I'm fine."
She stood up and went to the bathroom to splash cold water on her face, trying to look a bit more presentable. She then sat down at the dining table, but after only a few bites, a severe wave of morning sickness hit her. She ultimately managed to keep down a cup of milk and a few prenatal vitamins before retreating to her bedroom to collapse into an exhausted sleep.
The next day was Saturday. After nearly a full week of gloomy, rainy weather, the sky finally cleared. The brilliant blue expanse and fluffy white clouds brought a much-needed sense of relief. Felicia decided to stay home, relaxing on the balcony with a good book. Beside her, Rusty and Marble, the two stray kittens she had rescued, were curled up together. The tiny furballs playfully batted at each other with their stubby little paws. When Rusty clumsily lost his balance and tumbled over, Marble immediately pounced on him in triumph. Watching their innocent antics brought a rare, genuine smile to Felicia's lips.
Felicia took a seat on the sofa. "I found them in the bushes outside during the rainstorm a few days ago."
Jeremy clicked his tongue, and the two tiny creatures immediately scrambled over to investigate him. "They are adorable. Have you taken them to the vet for their shots?"
"Yes, they got a clean bill of health and all their vaccines," she assured him.
"That's wonderful." Jeremy picked up a feather wand from the table and began waving it. The kittens practically tripped over themselves trying to catch the toy. "Having some company around the apartment is good for you. Have you named them yet?"
"Just Rusty and Marble."
Jeremy chuckled. "Well, those are certainly straightforward."
"They are easy to remember," Felicia smiled.

Oh nooo!! Don’t tell me Max will get washed ashore on a remote island then loses all his memory, then falls inlove with the local girl who saves him. Then when he meets Felicia again he won’t recognize her and breaks her heart again. Additional plot twist is that Felicia is pregnant with their 2nd child. Please pleaseee don’t give us this scenario.. LOL!!!...
If Max can be forgiven Darrin can be forgiven. And I do not like this marriage business but if it has to happen I hope after he gets stranded on some remote island alone while Felicia and his family fight over custody she wins and also gets half his estate. Then by time he comes back she's found having and remarried. Lol...
The writer is good. They're making me interested in Max. I won't say like yet....
It seems the only one who hasn't suffered is Max. Even his family fakes anger and disappointment all their own doing so they suffer a little. Everyone else has suffered. Luke and Jeremy unrequited. Felicia has suffered the most from family to unrequited to romance to long suffering Mother. Even baby Anne never had a mother til Felicia suffered then came back only to suffer some more. lol...
Oh no what did Colton do?... I have a bone to pick. When Olisha had to go the hospital why beg for Felicia? When she so loved Max? Seemed like she was in on the setup for Felicia to see a suicide for the 2nd time orchestrated by holden and his brother again. I might drop this series it's becoming endless with no real satisfaction for me. I don't need it to end because it's like a soap opera but if things don't end up making sense, tying up loose storylines it's gonna get old fast for me. Good luck author....
Anne, I think your baby brother is on the way. Thank goodness it doesn't say that Felicia is crying just like the last time but still, there's no willingness on her part. Max! You need to try harder. Make her fall in love with you again....
