His deep, gravelly voice broke the quiet. "Were you afraid I'd die?"
Felicia looked up at him, her fingers gripping the small bag tightly. "I didn't want Anne to lose her father."
The man's dark eyes locked onto her with a piercing intensity, as if trying to strip away her defenses and see straight through to her soul. "Is that the only reason?"
"The reason doesn't matter. You..."
Before she could finish, the man cut her off. "It matters to me."
Felicia's pupils trembled slightly. The words she wanted to say caught in her throat, refusing to be spoken or swallowed. Looking into his eyes was like staring into a turbulent midnight ocean. They somehow threatened to swallow her whole.
Suddenly, Max reached out and pulled her firmly into his arms. The strong scent of alcohol mixed with his unique masculine fragrance flooded her senses. He didn't say a word, just held her tightly against his chest. The silence was overwhelming, amplifying the heavy sound of his breathing and the frantic beating of a heart.
Unnoticed by them, a Bentley slowly pulled to a stop a short distance away. Darin stepped out of the car, his brow furrowing deeply as he witnessed the scene.
An eternity seemed to pass before Max slowly loosened his grip. He lowered his head, preparing to lean in closer.
"Felicia." Greg's voice rang out from the villa.
Max froze. Felicia jolted back to reality and shoved him away, stumbling back two steps before turning to look at Greg. "Greg."
Greg walked over, shot a cold glare at Max, and asked Felicia, "Are you done talking?"
"We're done," Felicia replied.
Greg turned his attention back to Max. "Mr. Hawthorne, I hope you won't do anything to damage Felicia's reputation."
Max stared at Greg but remained silent.
Felicia returned to her bedroom. Anne was sitting on the sofa reading a book. Seeing her mother return, she immediately jumped down and ran over. "Mom!"
Looking into Anne's sparkling, expectant eyes, Felicia knew exactly what she was waiting for. "I gave it to Dad. He went home."
"Did Dad like it?"
Felicia led Anne to the edge of the bed and sat down. "Only he knows that."
"Then I'll ask him," Anne declared, immediately reaching for her smartwatch to make a call.
Felicia stopped her. "Maybe wait until tomorrow, Anne."
Anne thought about it for a second. "Okay, I'll ask Dad tomorrow."

Oh nooo!! Don’t tell me Max will get washed ashore on a remote island then loses all his memory, then falls inlove with the local girl who saves him. Then when he meets Felicia again he won’t recognize her and breaks her heart again. Additional plot twist is that Felicia is pregnant with their 2nd child. Please pleaseee don’t give us this scenario.. LOL!!!...
If Max can be forgiven Darrin can be forgiven. And I do not like this marriage business but if it has to happen I hope after he gets stranded on some remote island alone while Felicia and his family fight over custody she wins and also gets half his estate. Then by time he comes back she's found having and remarried. Lol...
The writer is good. They're making me interested in Max. I won't say like yet....
It seems the only one who hasn't suffered is Max. Even his family fakes anger and disappointment all their own doing so they suffer a little. Everyone else has suffered. Luke and Jeremy unrequited. Felicia has suffered the most from family to unrequited to romance to long suffering Mother. Even baby Anne never had a mother til Felicia suffered then came back only to suffer some more. lol...
Oh no what did Colton do?... I have a bone to pick. When Olisha had to go the hospital why beg for Felicia? When she so loved Max? Seemed like she was in on the setup for Felicia to see a suicide for the 2nd time orchestrated by holden and his brother again. I might drop this series it's becoming endless with no real satisfaction for me. I don't need it to end because it's like a soap opera but if things don't end up making sense, tying up loose storylines it's gonna get old fast for me. Good luck author....
Anne, I think your baby brother is on the way. Thank goodness it doesn't say that Felicia is crying just like the last time but still, there's no willingness on her part. Max! You need to try harder. Make her fall in love with you again....
