Vivian tilted her head up as he approached, her eyes curved into sweet crescents. "Maybe it's a sixth sense. I had a feeling someone was rushing back to see me, so I wasn't tired at all."
Silas didn't reply. He stopped right in front of the couch, staring down at her.
His gaze instantly sharpened.
Vivian's heart practically leaped into her throat, but she forced a smile. "...What's wrong?"
"Your book is upside down."
"..."
Vivian tossed the book aside and reached out to pull him down beside her, sniffing playfully. "I heard a noise and wanted to look like I was studying hard while you were gone. I guess I messed up the aesthetic..."
With one sentence, she justified both her erratic behavior and the upside-down book.
Silas's eyes burned like torches. He raised a hand and gently stroked her hair.
Nestled in her strands was a tiny feather.
It was a well-known fact that Old Mr. Ziegler loved birds; his entire courtyard was filled with chirping parrots.
Silas pinched the weightless feather between his fingers, rolling it thoughtfully. Since it was behind her head, Vivian couldn't see the motion, nor did she realize he was holding anything. She only registered that he was actively cuddling her, which felt highly out of character.
"What's gotten into you?"
She poked his chest playfully.
"Didn't you rush back to surprise me? Stop looking so serious, yeah?"
Silas ignored the question. His gaze swept the room with calculating precision, finding nothing out of place.
He glanced toward the balcony.
The balcony was wide and empty. But they were only on the second floor, and the exterior featured an extended ledge alongside Roman columns and a planter box. With Liam's agility, coming and going was a breeze.
Heh.
How amusing.
Scaling the wall was one thing, but intentionally leaving a feather behind? He was terrified Silas wouldn't figure it out.
Seeing him completely silent, Vivian's anxiety spiked. She licked her lips, scrambling for something to say, when the man suddenly stood up.
"What... are you doing?"
"Showering."
Looming over her, his expression was obscured by the backlighting.
Vivian blinked innocently. "Want some help?"
