The Stand-In Who Burned the Script novel Chapter 405

Silence stretched across both ends of the line. The quiet was so profound they could almost hear each other breathing.

It was a strange feeling, one Vivian couldn't quite put into words.

But she knew exactly what was happening. Silas was... trying to coax her?

"Whatever it takes?" she asked.

"You can try and see."

"..."

There it was again. Those words sounded vaguely like a threat—though, given the context and his tone, he might not actually be threatening her.

It would be a long time before Vivian realized that when he said, 'You can try and see,' he was actually asking himself.

He was testing the waters, waiting to see if her chaotic, unscripted antics would actually manage to piss him off.

"I want to see you tomorrow."

She threw the demand out like a probe, then nodded to herself in affirmation. "Yes, I need to see you by tomorrow."

Silas let out a brief chuckle. "You're quite bold."

"What's the point if I don't even dare to ask?"

She let out a dramatic sigh. "But I'm just saying it. We both know that if you decide not to come back, there's absolutely nothing I can do about it."

It was worse than having no control.

If he took too long, she'd probably forget why she was even mad in the first place.

For any other woman, demanding 'I want to see you tomorrow' while he was away on business would sound incredibly unreasonable.

But coming from Vivian, it felt entirely natural. It was as if the man was supposed to drop everything to cater to her, as if she were meant to be placed on a pedestal.

Silas's dark eyes were bottomless pools, entirely unreadable.

Vivian quickly changed the subject, chatting about random things until work demanded her attention. She blew a kiss into the receiver. "Gotta get to work. Remember to miss me."

Before Silas could respond, the line went dead.

Logan Lawson had just brought the food to the table, perfectly catching his furrowed brow.

"What's this? Is the great Boss Sterling actually getting pushed around?"

Silas tossed his phone aside and moved to the dining table, his face devoid of emotion. "Simon has a few more things to wrap up here. Have him arrange a car to drive me back tonight."

"..."
