The Captain I Married by Chance novel Chapter 608

Cynthia felt a bit guilty under the officers' intense stares.

She mentally cursed Mia a few times.

If Mia had just given her a heads-up beforehand, she wouldn't have almost slipped up.

Thankfully, she only knew from Leonard that the police would come to take a statement today, but she genuinely didn't know the exact reason.

Otherwise, with the officers' sharpness and professionalism, they would have seen right through her.

Once the procedures were done and the statements properly recorded, the police took their leave.

Cynthia walked them to the door, watched them leave, and waited at the entrance for ten minutes to make sure they weren't coming back before striding back into the room.

She immediately lashed out at Mia, "What the hell are you doing?"

"Do you know how furious your father is?"

Mia wasn't worried about Leonard at all. She smiled. "Mom, why are you panicking? The police didn't find anything, did they?"

"Did you actually want them to find something?"

Cynthia paced the room, glaring darkly at her daughter. "Mia, what are you thinking? Do you know how precarious our situation is right now?"

"You know what your father is like. He's incredibly selfish. If he ever finds out you're going behind his back and doing things that cross his interests, he will show absolutely no mercy."

Back then, Nora's mother had helped him so much, but when Leonard decided to cut her off, he did it ruthlessly.

Over the years, Cynthia had realized that instead of pinning her hopes on a man, she needed to figure things out herself.

"Oh, relax, Mom."

Mia had lost all her previous panic.

She even curled her lips into a genuinely good-humored smile.

"Actually, I'm running an experiment."

Cynthia looked at her in surprise. "Experiment?"

Taking a few steps to sit in front of Mia, Cynthia involuntarily lowered her voice. "What do you mean?"

Mia matched her low volume and whispered a few sentences.
