Aaron owed Mia a massive debt this time. If she hadn't bulldozed through the objections to bail him out, he would have been thoroughly screwed. While he was locked up, he had hoped for a lot of people to come to his rescue, but Mia hadn't been one of them.
The moment he was brought to her, though, he understood exactly why she had done it.
"Did you get what I asked for?"
Mia had demanded BBQ skewers from the South Street Food Market of Luminport. Aaron had driven three hours round-trip just to get it.
He handed over the takeout bags, keeping his head down, too afraid to ask who she was on the phone with. "I got it."
He wiped a bead of cold sweat from his forehead. Suddenly, Mia snapped. She grabbed the bag of food and hurled it directly at his face.
The lukewarm BBQ slammed into him. Greasy sauce exploded everywhere, ruining his clothes. Worse, the sharp bamboo skewers sliced across his cheek and neck, leaving bloody scratches.
A wave of pain hit him. He instinctively reached up to grab his face, but stopped dead when he met Mia's eyes. They were filled with pure, unadulterated malice.
She had bailed him out solely so she could torture him. This woman was an absolute psycho. How had he ever thought she was a good catch?
"What the hell is wrong with you?" Mia shrieked. "I told you to get me food, and you bring me this garbage? Who eats cold BBQ? It's a greasy mess! Are you trying to make me sick?"
Aaron bit his lip. He wanted to scream that he had driven over a hundred miles an hour, and it still would have gotten cold.
"I'm sorry," he muttered. Knowing Mia was his only lifeline right now, he swallowed his pride.
